Notes, observations from Huskies’ seventh practice of spring

Practice was a little more lively this morning at Husky Stadium, where the Huskies worked out for about two hours in ideal conditions yet again. And while the offense seemed to move the ball a little better than it has recently, the news wasn’t all good for that side of the ball. Read on.

--- Another offensive lineman sustained an apparent injury on Friday, this time third-year sophomore right tackle Kaleb McGary, who participated early but spent most of the day having his left knee evaluated by trainers. He eventually had a bag of ice wrapped around it. UW coach Chris Petersen came over to offer him some words of encouragement, then said afterward only that McGary was “fine.” Something to keep an eye on.

--- Two other offensive linemen -- Trey Adams and Michael Kneip -- wore yellow, no-contact jerseys and were therefore limited.

--- Players who were limited or non-participants: Austin Joyner, Brandon Beaver, Jared Pulu, Brayden Lenius, Quinten Pounds, Jason Scrempos, John Turner and Ben Burr-Kirven, who appeared to injure his knee during Wednesday’s practice.

--- It was a strong day for quarterback Jake Browning. He had a pair of impressive deep throws, both to John Ross, both touchdowns. The first was a perfectly-thrown pass between cornerback Kevin King and safety JoJo McIntosh for about a 41-yard touchdown during an 11-on-11 period. Ross ran up the left sideline, and Browning dropped the throw perfectly between the two defenders for the score.

Later, during a 7-on-7 period, Ross sprinted past King in 1-on-1 coverage and Browning hit him in stride for what looked like about a 60-yard touchdown reception.

Browning also made a few other nice throws, including a big gain on a short slant route to Nik Little. But his final 11-on-11 series didn’t go as well: after scrambling a few yards short of the first-down marker on 3rd-and-long, Browning threw an interception to Budda Baker on 4th-and-short.

K.J. Carta-Samuels also commanded a series during the final 11-on-11 period, completing about a 23-yard pass to redshirt freshman receiver Andre Baccellia before throwing an incompletion, scrambling out of bounds for a short loss, throwing another incompletion, then throwing an interception to sophomore cornerback Jordan Miller on the final play of practice.

--- Speaking of Baccellia, he had a pretty productive practice, and he seems to be having a nice spring. He caught several passes during competitive periods and showed some decent burst to pick up yards after the catch. One of those guys who seems to get open a lot.

--- UW’s nickel package looked like this today: Darren Gardenhire and Kevin King at the corners, Budda Baker lining up on the slot, and McIntosh and Trevor Walker at safety. Looks like Sidney Jones is still being held out of contact periods, though he again suited up and participated in drills.

--- With Adams, Kneip and McGary all out, the first-team offensive line featured, from left to right, Andrew Kirkland, Jake Eldrenkamp, Coleman Shelton, Shane Brostek and Devin Burleson. The second-team line consisted of Jared Hilbers, Henry Roberts, Matt James, Jesse Sosebee and Kirkland.

--- Redshirt freshman defensive back De’Andre’ Watson intercepted a pass thrown by Tony Rodriguez during the 7-on-7 period.

--- Jaylen Johnson and Joe Mathis each had “sacks” during 11-on-11 periods.

--- The Huskies practice again on Saturday, though that session is closed to the media. It’s also UW’s Junior Day for recruits.
