Huskies to renew home-and-home basketball series with Gonzaga on Dec. 7 in Spokane
Washington’s renewed basketball series against Gonzaga will begin on the other side of the state.
It was already known that the Huskies and Bulldogs would resume their lapsed home-and-home series next season, but there was some disagreement regarding which campus would host the first game. The schools announced on Wednesday that Gonzaga will host the Huskies on Dec. 7 at the 6,000-seat McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane in what will be Washington’s first game in that building in nearly 10 years.
The teams played each other last season in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. Gonzaga won that game, 80-64. The last time the programs met for a game on one of their campuses was Dec. 9, 2006, a 97-77 Gonzaga victory in Spokane.
The Huskies hold a 29-15 edge in the all-time series, but have lost nine of their last 10 games against the Bulldogs. UW’s last victory over Gonzaga, a 99-95 win in Seattle, came on Dec. 4, 2005.
ESPN’s Andy Katz reported in December that UW and Gonzaga were at an “impasse” over where to play next season’s game. Gonzaga wanted the game to be in Spokane, Katz reported, because of its already-travel-heavy nonconference schedule. The teams will meet in Seattle in 2017-18 as the four-year, home-and-home series continues.
Adding intrigue to the matchup is Gonzaga’s addition of Nigel Williams-Goss, the former second-team All-Pac-12 point guard who transferred from UW following the 2014-15 season and will be eligible to play for the Bulldogs this season after sitting out in 2015-16.
Gonzaga, which advanced to the Sweet 16 last season, recently lost star sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis to the NBA draft, and also loses star forward Kyle Wiltjer to graduation. Williams-Goss figures to be one of GU’s most important players. The Bulldogs also return guards Josh Perkins and Silas Melson.
