UW hoops: 2017 recruit Daejon Davis announces he is no longer committed to Huskies

The lone player committed to the Washington’s men’s basketball team in the 2017 recruiting class says he is re-opening his recruitment.

Daejon Davis, a 4-star guard from Garfield High School, tweeted on Friday morning that he is no longer committed to the Huskies. Davis also wrote that Washington “will remain at the top of my list.”

Davis committed to Washington after an unofficial visit in August, saying at the time that he was committing “to start a trend in my class” of local players going to UW. At the time, Davis was still enrolled at Lakeside School, but later transferred to Garfield and starred there as a junior last season. He attended many UW home games in 2015-16, sometimes shooting around on the court afterward.

Scout.com ranks Davis, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard, as the No. 40 overall prospect in the 2017 class. He is considered one of the top prospects on the west coast. So is Garfield teammate Jaylen Nowell, who is also one of UW’s top recruiting targets.

Of his decision to retract his commitment, Davis told Scout.com: “Honestly, I just haven’t felt the same about it and I never looked at other options, so I just decided that I'd at least look around and find my most fitting college to attend which could still very well be UW.”

A few other UW basketball notes ...

--- Junior college guard Braian Angola-Rodas, an NJCAA Division I first-team All-American last season, is scheduled to visit UW this weekend. Angola-Rodas averaged 21.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game as a sophomore at North Idaho College last season. He was also a teammate of ex-Husky Nigel Williams-Goss at Findlay Prep.

--- Former Huskies assistant T.J. Otzelberger, who returned to Iowa State last season, is the new head coach at South Dakota State.
