Notes, observations from the Huskies’ 13th practice of the spring
It was unseasonably warm this morning at Husky Stadium, where the Washington Huskies practiced for about two hours in ideal conditions. There wasn’t much excitement -- players were only in helmets and jerseys and shorts and shoes, with no pads on -- but we’ll go ahead and recap the workout anyway.
--- Players who were either limited or not participating: LB Ben Burr-Kirven, WR Brayden Lenius, WR Quinten Pounds, DB Brandon Beaver, DB Austin Joyner, OL Kaleb McGary, LB Keishawn Bierria, LB Connor O’Brien, DL Jason Scrempos, DL Jared Pulu and TE David Ajamu.
--- First-team offensive line looked the same, with Trey Adams, Jake Eldrenkamp, Coleman Shelton, Shane Brostek and Andrew Kirkland. The second-team offensive line also remained unchanged with Jared Hilbers, Michael Kneip, Matt James, Jesse Sosebee and Devin Burleson.
--- There wasn’t much in the way of actual competition today, save for a 7-on-7 drill and the final, 11-on-11 team period. Tony Rodriguez commanded the first series at quarterback, leading the second-team offense down the field for what appeared to be a touchdown on about a 19-yard pass from Rodriguez to Andre Baccellia. Rodriguez also completed about a 20-yard strike to Will Dissly, scrambled for a first down, connected with Forrest Dunivin and Baccellia on a pair of slant routes, and took a sack from Vita Vea on the play before he hit Baccellia for the apparent score.
--- Jake Browning took over with the first-team offense against the first-team defense (with some reserves mixed in) and led a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive capped by about an 18-yard pass to Drew Before in the back right corner of the end zone. Browning nearly completed a deep pass up the left sideline to John Ross III on the second play of the drive, but it was broken up by walk-on defensive back Dustin Bush.
On the next play, a third-and-long, Browning found tight end Darrell Daniels for about a 17-yard gain and a first down. After missing on a pair of throws, he connected with Dante Pettis for about a 20-yard gain and another first down, and moved the offense into the red zone with completions to Drew Sample and Nik Little.
--- Rodriguez made one of the best throws of the day on a deep pass to Ross during 7-on-7. Ross ran past the coverage of Brandon Lewis. And Rodriguez also dropped a nice pass into the hands of new tight end Jeff Lindquist on a corner route. Lindquist leaped over the coverage of Jordan Miller to snag it.
--- Pettis, Pounds and Andre Baccellia practiced returning punts. Ross, Budda Baker and Chico McClatcher practiced returning kicks.
--- The Huskies return to practice on Wednesday morning, their final workout before Saturday’s spring event at Husky Stadium.
