Notes, observations from another sunny spring practice No. 14 for the Huskies

The next time the Washington Huskies take the field for a football practice -- 12:30 p.m. Saturday -- it will be open to the public and televised by the Pac-12 Networks. It will also be UW’s final practice of the spring. The Huskies’ 14th practice of the spring came and went without as much fanfare on Wednesday morning at Husky Stadium. I was reporting something else during the middle of the workout, so I didn’t see it all, but here are a few notes from what I did see.

--- Some good news for UW on the injury front: right tackle Kaleb McGary, who appeared to injure his left knee a couple weeks ago and has not practiced since, suited up in pads (the team was just in shoulder pads and helmets today) and went through some early drills with the team. He didn’t do anything during 11-on-11 periods, but the fact that he suited up at all is probably a good sign.

Players who were limited included WR Brayden Lenius, WR Quinten Pounds, TE David Ajamu, DB Brandon Beaver, DB Austin Joyner, LB Ben Burr-Kirven, LB Matt Preston, LB Connor O’Brien.

--- Jordan Miller snagged another interception, his fifth of the spring, on a pass thrown by quarterback Tony Rodriguez during a 7-on-7 drill. Walk-on linebacker Gerran Brown also tallied an interception on a Rodriguez pass during the final 11-on-11 period of practice.

--- The offense didn’t do much during the final team period. They went backward during their final series. First, Jake Browning was sacked on a trick play by defensive lineman John Clark. Then the offense was penalized for holding. Then they were penalized for a false start. Then Browning completed a pair of short passes to walk-on receiver Drew Before to end practice

Prior to that, Browning led the offense to roughly the defense’s 32-yard line before being sacked by Elijah Qualls and Psalm Wooching on 4th and 7. Browning had a pair of successful scrambles on that series, but the key play was a third-down pass interference call against cornerback Darren Gardenhire.

--- The first and second-team offensive lines looked the same as they have recently. Trey Adams, Jake Eldrenkamp, Coleman Shelton, Shane Brostek and Andrew Kirkland worked with the No. 1 offense, and Jared Hilbers, Michael Kneip (and Henry Roberts), Matt James, Jesse Sosebee and Devin Burleson worked with the second team.

Linebacker Keishawn Bierria was held out of the team period again, and redshirt freshman DJ Beavers replaced him at weakside linebacker. Otherwise, the No. 1 defense featured Elijah Qualls and Greg Gaines up front, with Joe Mathis at buck, Azeem Victor at middle linebacker and Psalm Wooching at SAM linebacker, Budda Baker and JoJo McIntosh at safety, and Gardenhire, Kevin King and Miller in together in a nickel package.
