Notes, highlights from Huskies’ final open practice of fall camp
The Huskies held their ninth practice of fall camp on Wednesday afternoon, another sunny one on Montlake. It was also the final practice of the season that was open to media, so this will, therefore, be the final practice report of the season. Enjoy it.
--- Kaleb McGary continued to work at right tackle with the No. 1 offensive line, and while Matt James again got some work at right guard with the No. 1 group, Shane Brostek also spent some time at right guard during the final team period. That position appears to still be very much up in the air.
Otherwise, offensive and defensive personnel looked about how you would expect, with Elijah Qualls, Greg Gaines and Jaylen Johnson up front, Psalm Wooching, Azeem Victor, Keishawn Bierria and Joe Mathis at linebacker, Sidney Jones and Kevin King at cornerback and Budda Baker and Jojo McIntosh at safety with the first-team defense. That group obviously changes some when the Huskies go to their nickel package, etc., but that’s the rough idea of what the starters look like.
--- The defense grabbed four interceptions today -- one each by Baker, Benning Potoa’e, freshman cornerback Isaiah Gilchrist, and walk-on freshman defensive back Myles Bryant. Gilchrist’s was particularly noteworthy -- after batting the ball up in the air about two or three times, he dove with full extension to haul in the pick. Chris Petersen took a while to decide whether it was an incompletion or an interception -- a video replay would have been helpful -- and eventually granted the turnover.
Bryant’s interception came off K.J. Carta-Samuels during the final 11-on-11 period of the day, with Carta-Samuels quarterbacking the third-team offense against the third-team defense.
--- The offense scored a few touchdowns during the 7-on-7 period -- including a nice slant from Jake Browning to John Ross and a fade from Tony Rodriguez to Quinten Pounds -- and got in the end zone during the final 11-on-11 drill when Lavon Coleman took about a 30-yard carry to the 3-yard line before Browning threw a short touchdown pass to Dante Pettis.
The final series of the day, however, went much better for the defense. On a possession that began at the defense’s 23-yard line, Myles Gaskin carried for a short gain, then carried for a loss of about three yards, and then Browning was sacked by Gaines and sacked by Qualls to end the day. Qualls actually brought him to the ground, somewhat accidentally, though Petersen didn’t seem bothered by it.
--- Our next interview availability with players and coaches will be Saturday.
