Tracking Ryan Moore at the Masters
This week: The Masters, Thursday through Sunday, Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia
First-round score: 8-over-par 80.
Position: Tied for 81st, 14 strokes behind leader Jordan Spieth (66).
Recap: Huh? Moore started his round with a bogey, ended his round with a final one – and there wasn’t much in the middle to get excited about, either. He made the turn at 3-over 39, and then the wheels came off. At the 11th hole, his drive went so far left, he had to punch out into the fairway well short of the green. His third shot safely stayed right of the green – and away from the pond. He chipped on, then missed his bogey-saving putt from 13 feet away. And on both back-nine par-5 holes, Moore visited Rae’s Creek short of the greens. At No. 13, he went for the green from 200 yards away, and it plopped into a watery grave. Two holes later, his short pitch shot from 80 yards on the right side got wet as well, leading to a double bogey. The only thing that prevented this from being his first birdie-free round at the Masters since 2013 was a birdie at No. 16, sinking a 12-footer from behind the hole.
