High school football roundup: Arredondo’s sack shifts momentum as W.F. West tops Lake Washington, 28-14

Big play, big human being, huge turn of events.

A sack on fourth down by 6-foot-6, 290-pound Hunter Arredondo let W.F. West escape a near-disastrous sequence that had the Bearcats’ backs to their own goal line in the third quarter, with Lake Washington poised for a tie-breaking score.

With its composure restored, tenth-ranked W.F. West (4-0) went on to a 28-14 nonleague win over Class 3A opponent Lake Washington (2-2) on Friday night in Chehalis.

“We get the sack to get out of it,” W.F. West coach Bob Wollan said, “and you could feel the lift.”

It was looking bad. With the Bearcats at their own 37-yard-line, Lake Washington’s Brett Walker sacked W.F. West quarterback Nole Wollan for six yards. A bad snap on the next play was recovered by Lake Washington’s Colby Coco at the W.F. West 9.

A Ryan Clifford run got the ball inside the 2, at which point the Bearcats needed a play. They got it from Arredondo, a senior, who blew through blockers to smother Kangaroos quarterback Adam Long for a 13-yard loss and change of possession.

“Somebody had to step up,” Arredondo said.

After the reprieve, the Bearcats did little with the ball, and punted it away. But W.F. West’s Dakota Hawkins fell on a fumble at the Lake Washington 22, and one play later Austin Emery powered 16 yards up the middle to set up sophomore Zach Sloan’s 2-yard touchdown run.

The Bearcats clinched it with a 32-yard scoring pass from Wollan to Hawkins. Tyson Guerrero and Dalton Njos both came up with interceptions in the final minutes to seal it.

“Our defense picked us up all night long,” said Bob Wollan, whose team visits Aberdeen to start 2A Evergreen Conference play next week. “It was a good game against a good opponent to see where we’re at before we start league.”

In the first half, Lake Washington junior safety Cody Wilson plucked a tipped Nole Wollan pass out of the air and returned it 57 yards to the end zone for the game’s first points.

The Bearcats’ first two possessions of the game resulted in a punt, and a successful fake punt that was stymied by Wilson’s pick-six, which gave the Kangaroos an early 7-0 lead. But late in the first quarter, W.F. West got rolling behind running back Austin Emery.

The 195-pound senior barreled for 9, 12 and 8 yards and was joined by running quarterback Wollan, who punched over the last yard to cap a 6-play, 64-yard drive in the second quarter.

Lake Washington countered with a 45-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2 by senior Ryan Clifford.

The Bearcats tied it up just before halftime on their crispest progression of downs in the half. Wollan worked behind the straight-ahead blocking up front for 24 yards on six carries in the march, but his biggest play was a long count on fourth-and-5 on the Lake Washington 10 that drew the Kangaroos offside and earned a first down. One play later, Emery cut outside and won the race to the end zone from 5 yards out.

“To come out of the half all square was huge,” Nole Wollan said.

Wollan and Emery had identical rushing stats — 19 carries for 77 yards, with one touchdown apiece. The Bearcats (4-0) limited Lake Washington to 152 total yards.

Olympia 42, at Curtis 23: Scott Gunther had another big game — 30 carries, 219 yards and four touchdowns — but it was a few other contributors who brought the Bears back at Viking Stadium in University Place.

Trailing 17-7, Olympia (4-0, 4-0 4A SPSL) got a 55-yard touchdown scamper from Owen Shea midway through the second quarter.

And with 34 seconds to go in the half, the Bears took a 21-17 lead on Ketner Young’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Corbin Hartsock.

Gunther closed the deal with a pair of fourth-quarter scorings runs — 20 and 35 yards.

At Timberline 24, Central Kitsap 8: Two running backs split work for the Blazers (3-1, 2-0 3A SSC). Michael Barnes (20 carries, 176 yards, one TD) gave Timberline a 21-0 lead at halftime with an 89-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Anthony Hathaway had his third outing this season of 100-plus rushing yards — finishing with 102 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown — before he was sidelined with a knee injury during the third quarter. Coaches said he will be evaluated before next week’s game at Shelton.

At Gig Harbor 37, Yelm 29: Martin Brazier rushed for a career-high 194 yards, and Ben Hollenbeck chipped in with another 140 as the Tides held off the Tornados at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy.

Brazier’s 56-yard touchdown gallop in the third quarter gave Gig Harbor a 30-7 lead before Brandon Thompson (137 rushing yards, two TDs) and Yelm rallied.

Rainier 44, at Morton-White Pass 14: The Timberwolves are the third 2015 playoff team Rainier (4-0, 2-0 2B Mountain) has knocked off in the last four weeks. Zach Lofgren had four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) for the Mountaineers, while Devan Stansil (two receiving, two rushing) also added four at Randle Field in Morton.

Morton-White Pass fumbled six times, losing three, allowing the Mountaineers to pull away with three unanswered scores in the fourth quarter. Lofgren hit Stansil for a 38-yard touchdown before Ian Russell added a 24-yard field goal. Stansil’s 46-yard run in the fourth sealed it.

NONLEAGUE

Black Hills 59, at Evergreen (Vancouver) 14: This big running back, small running back combination of Conner Furu and Jaden Toussaint is starting to hit its stride. For the second time in two weeks, Furu and Toussaint combined for six rushing touchdowns as the Wolves (2-2) stomped the Plainsmen at McKenzie Stadium in Vancouver.

Toussaint finished with 155 yards on nine carries and four touchdowns, while Furu added 129 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns.

At Kelso 35, Centralia 6: The Hilanders rushed for 320 yards on 51 carries to roll over the Tigers at Kelso High School. Max McDaniel rushed for 162 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns for the Hilanders.

Jose Pineda scored the lone touchdown for Centralia (2-2) on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter. Tigers quarterback Joey Aliff finished 6 of 17 passing for 93 yards.

At Montesano 63, Rochester 7: Trevor Ridgeway hit Carson Klinger on Montesano’s first offensive play for a 70-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs scored seven more unanswered to enter the half with a 58-0 lead at Rottle Field in Montesano. Rochester was held to minus-26 yards in the first half, while the fourth-ranked (1A) Bulldogs had 370.

The Warriors (0-4) dropped their fourth consecutive contest with the loss.

At King’s Way Christian 49, Elma 13: Ira Hartford bookended scoring with a pair of touchdown runs for Elma, but King’s Way Chrisitan put up 49 consecutive points in between to rout the Eagles (0-4) in Vancouver.

Hartford broke for an 80-yard run 13 seconds into the game — he rushed for 197 yards on 27 carries — and added Elma’s only other score on a 9-yard run with 9:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Stevenson 21, at Tenino 13: Two early touchdowns weren’t enough for the Beavers (3-1) at home, as Stevenson gradually chipped away.

Tenino’s Miles Cannon (10 of 26 passing, 162 yards, two TDs) found Spencer Brewer from two yards out in the first quarter. Cannon connected with Jace Griffis on a 54-yard pass three minutes later. But Stevenson held the Beavers scoreless in the final three frames, and put up one touchdown apiece in the second, third and fourth to slip away.
