High school baseball: The Olympian’s 2017 All-Area team

THE OLYMPIAN’S 2017 ALL-AREA BASEBALL TEAM

Player of the year: Tucker Stroup, Timberline, sr.

Coach of the year: Bryan Bullock, W.F. West

FIRST TEAM

PITCHERS

Logan Chase, Tumwater, sr.

Threw three one-hitters this season and posted a 7-0 record for the T-Birds. 2A EvCo first-teamer also recorded 56 strikeouts and a 1.02 ERA. Headed to Yakima Valley next season.

Derek Downey, Olympia, sr.

Two-time Olympian All-Area selection finished with a 1.54 ERA and 41 strikeouts. Lower Columbia signee was a first-team 4A SPSL selection, and had a towering presence at 6-foot-9.

Tyson Guerrero, W.F. West, jr.

The 2A EvCo MVP has the Bearcats in the state semifinals. He had a 1.87 ERA and 53 strikeouts entering the state playoffs. He has also paced W.F. West on offense, batting .433 with 19 RBIs, and adding three triples, a home run and seven stolen bases.

Dakota Hill, Yelm, sr.

Had great command, averaging just 12 pitches per inning. Was the 3A SSC pitcher of the year, finishing with a 0.98 ERA and 41 strikeouts. Posted a .407 batting average on 22 hits for the Tornados.

CATCHER

Jackson Davis, Tumwater, sr.

Led the T-Birds with seven doubles, and contributed 21 hits and 26 RBIs to a team that advanced to the first round of the 2A state playoffs. 2A EvCo first-teamer is headed to George Fox.

CORNER INFIELDERS

Kristian Knight, Black Hills, jr.

Started at first base when he wasn’t lighting up the mound. 2A EvCo first-teamer as a utility player had a 1.92 ERA as a pitcher, holding opponents to a .175 batting average and posting 50 strikeouts. Threw a no-hitter against Centralia.

Ben Maratita, River Ridge, sr.

Was a 2A SPSL Sound first-teamer as a DH, but played on the corners as needed. Knocked three home runs for the Hawks, and had 21 hits and 20 RBIs. Had a .389 batting average and .551 on-base percentage.

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

Nate Brosio, Black Hills, sr.

Didn’t commit one error at second base this season. Finished with a .371 batting average and hit two home runs in 2A a state-playoff game against North Kitsap. 2A EvCo first-teamer.

Ben Whitt, Timberline, sr.

Helped the Blazers reach the 3A state playoffs and was a 3A SSC first-team selection. Finished with a .381 batting average, hit one home run and contributed 12 RBI.

OUTFIELDERS

Tanner Johnson, Capital, sr.

Helped Capital reach the 3A state playoffs for the first time since 2010 in his first year playing outfield. 3A SSC first-teamer led the Cougars in nearly every category, and had a .471 batting average, 23 RBIs, 10 extra-base hits and eight stolen bases.

Noah Sirkel, Tumwater, yr.

Clark commit led the T-Birds with three home runs and finished with a .394 batting average and 17 RBIs. 2A EvCo first-teamer also had six doubles and five stolen bases.

Brandon Thompson, Yelm, sr.

Speedy and dangerous in the grass and can run down almost any ball. The catalyst to Yelm’s offense also hit .327 and was 12 for 12 in stolen base attempts. Will play at TCC next season.

UTILITY

Dakota Hawkins, W.F. West, jr.

Bearcats infielder also pitches, and was a first-team 2A EvCo selection. Had a .348 batting average entering the state playoffs, including seven doubles, two home runs and 22 RBIs. Was 4-0 on the mound with a 1.21 ERA and 41 strikeouts.

Catchers: Spencer Brewer, Tenino, sr.; Brendan Nee, Olympia, sr.

Infielders: Noah Andrews, Tumwater, sr.; Adrian Boites, W.F. West, sr.; Drew Forgione, W.F. West, sr.; Zach Lofgren, Rainier, soph.; Andrew Pullar, Tumwater, sr.; Robbie Wall, Tenino, sr.

Outfielders: Blake Anderson, River Ridge, sr.; Hodges Bailey, Centralia, sr.; Logan Hayes, Tumwater, jr.; Bryce Kincy, Black Hills, jr.; Ethan Loveless, Black Hills, soph.; Riley Wright, Tenino, sr.

Utility: Falcon Johnson, Shelton, soph.; Peter Kosierowski, Northwest Christian, sr.
