Who will win? Week 7 high school football games to watch, predictions
Here are three high school football games to watch this week in the lower South Sound, and a full schedule of every other game a local program is playing in.
4A SPSL
OLYMPIA (4-2) AT NO. 7 GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN (5-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Art Crate Stadium, Spanaway
About the Bears: Olympia got shut out last week by Sumner at Ingersoll. Prior to that, the Bears hadn’t been shut out at home since 2012. Olympia drove to the red zone a handful of times last week, but nothing panned out. QB Ketner Young (54 of 116, 717 yards, nine total TDs), RB Owen Shea (122 carries, 659 yards, seven TDs) and company look to get back on track against a team that has advanced to the state playoffs the past three seasons.
About the Eagles: Puyallup — the only undefeated team remaining in the 4A SPSL — shocked league favorites Sumner and Graham-Kapowsin the past two weeks, but don’t expect the Eagles to stay down long. Washington commit Dylan Morris (108 of 154, 1,743 yards, 14 TDs) is a pinpoint passer, and the Eagles have five players with more than 100 receiving yards this season. Tre Mason III (42 catches, 726 yards, five TDs) has been the top target so far.
Olympian pick: Graham-Kapowsin, 42-28.
3A SSC
YELM (4-2) AT CAPITAL (2-4)
7 p.m. Friday, Ingersoll Stadium, Olympia
About the Tornados: QB Kyle Robinson (70 of 135, 1,342 yards, 17 total TDs) continues to impress as the top passer in the lower South Sound. WR Kodee Gifford (10 catches, 237 yards, four TDs) has turned into a top target the past three weeks, but Robinson has his pick of talented receivers in this high-flying offense. The Tornados dropped their first league loss to Timberline last week, but are still in the driver’s seat to advance to the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.
About the Cougars: After dropping their third league loss on the road to Central Kitsap last week, Capital is on the brink of missing an 11th consecutive trip to the district playoffs. But, QB Grant Erickson (77 of 145, 1,101 yards, 11 TDs) and his receiving corps could be plenty dangerous if this meeting with Yelm turns into a shootout. In last week’s loss, WR Chris Penner (30 catches, 538 yards, five TDs) and WR Jack Collard (18 catches, 279 yards, four TDs) both reached the century mark in receiving yards.
Olympian pick: Yelm, 31-28.
2A EVCO
NO. 8 W.F. WEST (5-1) AT BLACK HILLS (4-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Tumwater District Stadium, Tumwater
About the Bearcats: QB Nole Wollan (56 of 97, 770 yards, 12 total TDs) and the Bearcats are as consistent as ever, and have the talent and experience to make a run at the 2A Evergreen Conference title. W.F. West’s only misstep was a narrow loss on the road at Lake Washington (28-23) three weeks ago. The other six games, the Bearcats have won by three or more touchdowns. W.F. West is averaging 39 points per game so far this season, while allowing just 13.
About the Wolves: Will the late-game heroics continue this week? Black Hills has won four of its last five games — all by six points or less — against Capital, Prairie, Centralia and Aberdeen. And the game-winning score in each of those came late in the fourth quarter or in overtime. Needless to say, coach Kirk Stevens likes the Wolves’ chances in late-game situations. But the competition gets tougher this week with the Bearcats in town, and next week against crosstown rival Tumwater.
Olympian pick: W.F. West, 35-17.
