Players from Timberline, Tumwater highlight local AP all-state selections
Sixteen players from high schools in Thurston County were selected to the Associated Press’ all-state football teams, released Friday afternoon.
The teams are voted on by sportswriters across the state of Washington.
First-team and honorable mention selections included players from Timberline (six), Tumwater (five), Rainier (three), Capital (one) and River Ridge (one), with multiple players being honored on offense and defense.
Tumwater lineman Cy Hicks, who helped the T-Birds reach the Class 2A title game for the second time in three years, was the only local first-team selection on both sides of the ball.
Hicks, a senior, blocked for an offense that rushed for more than 4,000 yards and averaged 37.7 points per game. Defensively, he led Tumwater with 65 tackles (eight for losses) and recovered two fumbles.
He was named the 2A Evergreen Conference MVP, and was a two-time Olympian All-Area selection. Hicks is also the defending 2A state heavyweight champion in wrestling.
Timberline led local selections with six players receiving first-team or honorable mention status.
Michael Barnes, Timberline’s do-everything player and The Olympian’s All-Area player of the year, was a first-team selection at defensive back in 3A, and an honorable mention pick as an all-purpose player.
The senior rushed for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns on 201 attempts this season, including rushing for more than 100 yards in six games. At free safety, he recorded 61 tackles and four interceptions — two of which he returned for touchdowns.
He also punted and returned kicks, and was named the 3A South Sound Conference MVP.
Timberline lineman Conner Warick, a senior, was another two-way selection. He was a first-team pick at defensive lineman, where he compiled 54 tackles (21 for losses), six sacks and two blocked punts — including one returned for a touchdown.
Warick was an honorable mention selection on the offensive line, finishing with 51 pancake blocks for an offense that averaged nearly 230 rushing yards per game. He was also named the 3A SSC lineman of the year and an Olympian All-Area selection.
Timberline senior Chase Bowes, who finished with 78 pancake blocks and didn’t allow any sacks, was a first-team selection as an offensive lineman. He was also selected to the 3A SSC first team and Olympian All-Area team at the position, blocking for a backfield that collected more than 2,700 rushing yards.
Mason Simeta, a Timberline senior, was a first-team selection at linebacker after tallying 91 tackles (18 for losses), eight sacks and returning an interception 55 yards for a touchdown.
The 3A SSC defensive MVP and Olympian All-Area selection led a Blazers defense that was allowing 43.9 yards per game on the ground entering the state quarterfinals.
Timberline kicker Tolby Selvester, a senior, was a first-team selection at the position after finishing 47 of 52 on PAT attempts, and connecting on all five of his field goal attempts, with a long of 28 yards. He was also a first-team 3A SSC selection and Olympian All-Area selection.
Jamin Faalogo, a junior for the Blazers who played a mixture of linebacker and corner, was named to the honorable mention team as a defensive back.
He finished with 74 tackles (10 for losses), six interceptions, five sacks and three fumble recoveries. He scored three defensive touchdowns on two interception returns and a fumble recovery.
Faalogo was also a 3A SSC and Olympian All-Area selection at defensive back.
Capital’s Chris Penner, who led the area in receiving for the second consecutive season, was an honorable mention pick at wide receiver. The junior finished with 57 catches for 1,066 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He had six games with 100 or more receiving yards, and four with multiple receiving touchdowns. Penner was a 3A SSC first-team selection this season, and is a two-time Olympian All-Area selection.
In 2A, four more Tumwater players received honors.
Aiden Slater, a senior, was named to the first team as a defensive lineman, tallying 62 tackles (seven for losses) and six sacks. He also recorded a safety, blocked kick, fumble recovery and had a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The 2A EvCo defensive MVP was also an Olympian All-Area selection.
Olympia transfer Connor Clark, a senior, was named to the first team at defensive back. He had 36 tackles (six for losses), five interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and a fumble recovery for the T-Birds at corner.
Clark scored in every phase, adding 61 carries for 553 yards and 15 touchdowns, and a 94-yard kickoff return for a score. He was also a 2A EvCo and Olympian All-Area selection.
Tumwater kicker Nathan Seaman was also named to the first team. He finished 47 of 51 on PAT attempts, and connected on 12 field goals — including eight in the state playoffs.
