High school softball: The Olympian’s 2021 All-Area team
First- and second-team selections for The Olympian’s 2021 All-Area high school softball team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Kamy Dacus, W.F. West, jr. — The 5-foot-9 right-hander pitched all but three innings this season for the Bearcats, resulting in a 16-0 record and a 0.69 earned run average. She struck out 185 batters while walking only 10 in 102 innings pitched. She was equally menacing at the plate, hitting .500, slugging .983 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in. She hit for the cycle in one game. Along with Olympia’s Aly Waltermeyer, Dacus is one of just two repeat first-team All-Area selections from the 2019 squad. “Kamy has a dominating and consistent presence in the circle,” said W.F. West coach Caty Lieseke. “When she’s at the plate, there’s always a chance the ball will leave the yard.”
COACH OF THE YEAR
Lindsay Walton, Yelm — In the old days, if a competitor won the same event three times in a row, they would get to take the trophy home and retire it. If there was hardware associated with The Olympian’s softball Coach of the Year award, Walton would already have the trophy on her mantle as she won it in 2017, 2018 and 2019. After her Tornados ran the table in the 3A South Sound Conference this season, finishing 14-0 with a team batting average over .400 and a team ERA just under 2.00, Walton receives the honor for the fourth consecutive time. Yelm showed nerves of steel in its final two match-ups with runner-up Timberline, winning both in the Tornados’ final at-bat to hang onto the league championship. Walton’s previous Olympian Coach of the Year honors came after guiding Yelm into a pair of state 3A championship games and a semi-final.
