Area preps football roundup: Black Hills upsets Montesano

Black Hills wanted to get rid of last season’s demons right out of the gate, and did just that Friday with a 55-32 non-league win over Class 1A 10th-ranked Montesano.

"Getting past last year and starting fresh," second-year Black Hills coach Kirk Stevens said. "This is a great first step to start new memories."

The Wolves finished third in Class 2A Evergreen last season at 5-5. They went on to lose a 24-21 heartbreaker to Hockinson in the district playoffs after leading 21-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

"The best way to get rid of that bitter taste is the sweet taste of victory," Stevens said.

The Wolves rushed for 349 yards for five touchdowns, and passed for another 205 yards for two touchdowns.

Running backs Cameron Berndson and Conner Furu, as well as wide receiver Mark Melendres, each scored two touchdowns for the Wolves. Furu opened the campaign on a 34-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and added another 1-yarder in the third.

Berndson added two 26-yard touchdown runs – one in the second, and one in the fourth. And Melendres caught a 67-yarder from quarterback Chase Morrow in the first and another 59-yarder in the third.

"We controlled the ball on the ground a bit more, but when we needed to pass did a great job there," Stevens said.

The Wolves travel to Rochester (1-0) next Friday at 7 p.m.

Tenino 49, Charles Wright 19

Running back Thomas Pier and company ran over the Tarriers for the non-league win.

Pier led the way, rushing for 311 yards on 32 carries, and scoring three touchdowns. Kaleb Strawn also rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries and scored a touchdown.

Quarterback Calvin Guzman threw three touchdowns for a combined 55 yards, and rushed for another himself.

"We did a great job running the ball," Tenino coach Randy Swilley said. "Last year was a one-man game with Thomas Pier. Strong and Guzman had a great game as well. … When you’ve got three guys who can run the ball, it’s really going to help."

Yelm 44, Steilacoom 14

The Tornadoes erased an early 7-0 lead to storm by the Sentinels in the non-league win.

Yelm and Steilacoom entered the half tied at 14, before the Tornadoes shut out the Sentinels in the second half, and added four touchdowns and a safety.

Running back Brandon Thompson led the way for Yelm with three touchdowns – two rushing, one receiving. Thompson finished with 226 all-purpose yards. Kaleb Lunderville also caught two touchdown passes.

W.F. West 13, Kingston 3

The Bearcats rallied from a scoreless first half – where they only racked up 48 yards in total offense – to shutout the Buccaneers in the second half and score two touchdowns.

Elijah Johnson rushed into the end zone with 5:17 left in the third quarter to make it 6-3, giving W.F. West a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Kingston scored its only points on a 25-yard field goal by Alex Barrett in the first quarter.

Brody Holcomb caught a 25-yard pass from Johnson in the fourth to seal it.

Elma 49, Klahowya 13

Ira Hartford rushed for four touchdowns for a combined 39 yards as the Eagles routed Klahowya.

The Eagles defense shut out Klahowya in all but one quarter – Klahowya scored all of its points in the third on two rushing touchdowns.
