High school sports roundup for Dec. 22

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Rogers Rams broke a two-game skid as they defeated Tahoma High School, 59-53.

The Rams (3-6, 1-3 4A SPSL) were led by senior wing Braden Hannold, who had 19 points and Daniel O’Brien, who had 11.

The Rams had a 51-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter but the Bears (1-7, 1-3 4A SPSL) came to life and trimmed the lead to six, that is as close as they would get as the Rams pick up their third win of the season.

Auburn 52, Fife 41: After trailing at halftime 23-22 the Auburn Trojans (5-2, 2-2 3A SPSL) found their spark in senior Tyler Prey — who led the second half run — scoring 22.

Auburn outscored Fife (3-7, 2-2 2A SPSL), 20-10, during the third quarter and ultimately won by 11 points.

Emerald Ridge 67, Spanaway Lake 54: The Jaguars (4-3, 4-0 4A SPSL) pulled away late as they out shot the Sentinels (6-3, 2-3 4A SPSL), 30-16, in the fourth quarter, sealing a 13-point victory.

Jason Cassens, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, scored a game-high 23 points for the Jaguars, junior Chase McGuire had 14.

Federal Way 87, Jefferson 74: Jalen McDaniels led the Eagles (7-0, 4-0 4A SPSL) in scoring with 21 points.

Alex Sommerfield was the leading scorer for Jefferson with 21 as well.

The Eagles capitalized on a 19-9 first quarter lead and never gave up the lead after that.

Timberline 77, South Kitsap 60: Austin Curry, a 6-foot-4 combo guard-forward, racked up a double-double in the Blazers’ win over the Wolves (2-4, 0-3 4A Narrows).

Curry scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds during the Blazers’ (4-1, 3-1 4A Narrows) 17-point victory. Erik Stevenson also had 13 points for Timberline.

Despite the loss, Eric Wattree scored 29 points for the Wolves, no other S-K player scored more than 12 points.

Timberline 55, Skyview 45: Despite being outscored 20-11 during the fourth quarter, the T-Birds held on for a 10-point victory at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

Puyallup 90, Graham-Kapowsin 56: Tony Gutierrez (26) and Deven Ness (21) led the Vikings surge as they defeated the Eagles — a 4A SPSL South opponent — by 34 points.

The Vikings (7-1, 3-1 4A SPSL) combined to score 57 points during the second and third quarter, outscoring the Eagles (1-7, 0-4 4A SPSL) 57-30 during that time.

Gig Harbor 48, Kingston 34: Michael Toglia led the Tides, scoring 12 points. Gig Harbor (2-5, 0-4 4A SPSL) received a much needed win as they travel to the Under Armour Holiday Classic on Dec. 26 in Carlsbad, California.

Bellarmine Prep 73, St. Joseph (Calif.) 53: After scoring 33 points against Troy (Calif.) on Monday Malachi Flynn did it again.

This time, he scored 35 points and boosted the Lions to their third straight victory in the Mission Prep Christmas Classic in California.

Curtis 70, Bethel 39: Aushanti Potts-Woods led the Vikings (8-0, 3-0 4A SPSL) in a dominant SPSL South victory with 20 points.

The Braves (2-8, 1-4 4A SPSL) fell due to a 15-6 run in the first quarter and a 19-3 deficit in the third. Zach Vargas and Brian Shaffer were the point-leaders for the Braves with 12 each.

O’Dea 100, Stadium 66: Senior Quin Barnard scored 26 and junior Xavier Smith scored 20 for the Fighting Irish as they routed the Tigers (2-4, 1-2 4A Narrows).

Despite the loss, Demachae Booth scored 16 and was Tiger’s leading scorer. Marcel Ferguson and Zakhari Smith both scored 13 for the Tigers as well.   

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The 1A Montesano Bulldogs won a closely contested girls basketball match on their home court against the 2A Tumwater T-Birds, 54-52.

Despite being outscored 17-12 during the fourth quarter the Bulldogs held on for a three-point victory.

6-foot-1 post Jordan Spradlin scored a game-high 26 points and was the standout Bulldog.

Timberline 46, Fife 25: The Blazers (4-3, 2-2 4A SPSL) went on an 18-0 run to begin the game, leaving the Trojans (3-6, 2-2 2A SPSL) scoreless during the first quarter.

Sara Bowen scored 13 points for the Blazers, leading the team. Carlie Kilcup of Fife was the overall point-leader for the game with 15.

Tahoma 44, Bonney Lake 35: Kaelan Shamfeldin led the Bears (5-3, 2-2 4A SPSL) with 14 points as Tahoma outscored the Panthers (3-6, 2-2 3A SPSL) 28-16 during the fourth quarter.

Ginny Mehl, a 6-foot-1 sophomore posted a double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Curtis 43, Bethel 31: The Vikings (5-3, 4-0 4A SPSL) outscored the Braves (5-4, 3-2 4A SPSL) 23-14 in the second half to win by 12 points against an SPSL South league opponent.

Gig Harbor 47, Olympic 26: The Tides (4-3, 2-2 4A Narrows) held the Trojans to 10 points during the second half, they did not give up a single pint during the third quarter (8-0).

Lincoln 56, Hazen 32 : The Abes (7-1, 30 3A Narrows) were led by 6-foot-2 senior Tamia Braggs, who scored 16.

The Highclimbers (7-2, 5-0 3A Seamount) were outscored 34-11 during the second half and were led by Sharaya Coe, with 11 points.

Todd Beamer 59, Mount Rainier 10: After only scoring four points during the first half the Rams just could not get anything going as seven of the nine players that played did not score a single point.
