Twelve players representing five schools in the Olympia area were named to The Associated Press’ 2015 all-state high school football teams.

The teams were announced Wednesday, after The Associated Press made selections based on votes from sportswriters across Washington.

Olympia’s David Woodward — The Olympian’s All-Area football player of the year — was selected to the Class 4A first team offense as an all-purpose player.

Woodward also was named the 4A Narrows League offensive MVP after racking up 727 yards on 92 carries, and another 484 yards on 31 receptions. He was 10 of 15 passing for 221 yards, and he tallied 489 yards on kick returns. Woodward had 15 total touchdowns. Defensively, he snagged four interceptions and made 71 tackles.

The core of Olympia’s offensive line, Brett Thompson, also was named to the 4A first-team offense after paving the way for a Bears backfield that rushed for more than 3,500 yards — including a school-record 503 yards against Yelm. Thompson also was named the 4A Narrows lineman of the year, and tallied 46 tackles — 17 for losses — and seven sacks on defense. He blocked six kicks.

Clay Markoff rounded out the area 4A selections with an honorable mention at linebacker. Markoff anchored an Olympia defense that allowed an average of 62.5 rushing yards per game. He is the school-record holder in tackles with 288 — 103 this season, 21 for losses — and tallied 9.5 sacks.

Capital’s Van Soderberg, a University of Washington commit, was named to the 3A first-team offense at kicker after going 10 for 10 on field-goal attempts this season, and recording 40 touchbacks. Soderberg also was awarded honorable mention on defense as a punter. He averaged 39 yards per punt and downed 11 inside the 20-yard line.

In 2A, six area players made the list — including four from Tumwater.

The T-Birds advanced to the 2A state final before losing to Prosser, 22-15, in the closing seconds of the state championship game.

Cade Otton, a junior, was a first-team selection on offense and defense. At tight end, Otton led Tumwater with 26 receptions for 500 yards and nine touchdowns. At linebacker, he was the 2A Evergreen Conference defensive player of the year with a team-leading 138 tackles — 105 solo, 12 for losses. Otton forced fumbles late in the fourth quarter in both the 2A state semifinal and championship games — the fumble he forced in the semifinal against Archbishop Murphy led to Tumwater’s game-winning drive. Otton has a full-ride scholarship offer from Eastern Washington, and has communicated with Division I schools, including UW and Stanford.

Jarid Barrett also was a first-team offensive selection at running back. He was the 2A EvCO offensive player of the year and led Tumwater in rushing with 175 carries for 1,030 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The leader of Tumwater’s offensive line at center, Tommy Brassfield was a first-team selection. He blocked for a T-Birds backfield that rushed for 4,285 yards — and averaged 306.1 rushing yards per game.

Griffin Shea rounded out Tumwater’s all-state selections. He was named to the first-team defense at defensive back. The 2A EvCo MVP also was named honorable mention at running back and had 1,040 all-purpose yards for the T-Birds. He scored 12 total touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return.

River Ridge had two players named to the 2A all-state team.

Zach Carter, a junior, was a first-team defensive selection at linebacker. He holds the school record in tackles with 213 — 91 this season — and was the 2A South Puget Sound League defensive player of the year.

Kelle Sanders, also a junior, was an honorable mention selection at defensive line. He recorded a school-record 11 sacks, forced three fumbles and recovered another two.

In 1A, Tenino’s Thomas Pier was an honorable mention selection at running back. Pier led Tenino in rushing with 1,670 yards — 1,950 total offensive yards — and 29 total touchdowns.
