High school sports roundup for Friday, Jan. 8
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bonney Lake overcame being down 10 points at halftime, 47-37, to edge Auburn, 73-71 on the road.
The Trojans outscored the Panthers, 31-19, in the second quarter and headed into halftime comfortably. The Panthers found their rhythm in the third, outscoring the Trojans 20-7 and entered the fourth with a four-point lead.
The Panthers were led by senior post Eric Voellger with 23 points. Michael Harvey had 13 and Donnie Hofstrand had 12 for the Panthers.
Washington 44, Fife 41: The Patriots relied on their second quarter efforts where they outscored the Trojans 17-11 to get another win in 2A SPSL play. Kaleb Whitemarsh led Washington with 17 points.
Mount Tahoma 70, North Thurston 67: Despite building a 20-13 lead after the first quarter the Rams could not hold onto the lead in a loss to Mount Tahoma. The Thunderbirds manufactured a comeback by outscoring North Thurston 27-19 during the third quarter. Jordan Horst led all scorers with 20 points, Destin Hicks-Armstrong and Demetrius Smith had 12 apiece.
Bellarmine Prep 59, Olympia 49: The Lions outscored the Bears in three out of four quarters in the victory. Malachi Flynn and Joey Bodia led the Lions with 16 points apiece, while Christian Moore added 15. Senior Olympia forward Brett Thompson had a game-high 19 points in the loss.
Yelm 63, Stadium 53: Christian Davis dominated the game, scoring a game-high 30 points in the Tornados’ win over the Tigers. Demachae Booth scored a game-high 18 for Stadium in the 4A Narrows game.
River Ridge 70, Clover Park 59: Jaden White, a senior guard, scored 18 points and led the Hawks past the Warriors. River Ridge outscored Clover Park 25-8 during the first quarter.
Auburn Riverside 76, Lakes 64: The Ravens started the game with a 19-10 run to end the first quarter. It was a close game after that, but the Lancers could not climb their way back into the game. Quintin Bethea was the leading scorer for Auburn Riverside with 21 points and Julian Gulchuk chipped in 19.
Enumclaw 57, Sumner 53: The Hornets edged the Spartans in a close 3A SPSL match-up, winning every quarter after trailing 9-6 after the first. Josh Erickson was the leading scorer for Enumclaw with 18, Griffin Webb had 10, and Justus Rainwater 9.
Lincoln 63, Shelton 36: Trevante Anderson led with a team-high 12 points as the Abes controlled the entire game against the Highclimbers.
Steilacoom 88, Orting 22: The Sentinels outscored the Cardinals 50-14 during the second half to get the commanding win. Chris McCray-Jackson led Steilaoom with 13 points, LaJon Enis-Carter added 12 and Jalen Thomas chipped in 11.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Sumner girls basketball team edged the Enumclaw Hornets 36-35 in a tightly contested 3A SPSL match-up
The Hornets outscored the Spartans 13-12 during the fourth quarter.
Annie Smith was the leading scorer for Sumner with 11 points.
White River 62, Franklin Pierce 53: The Hornets outscored the Cardinals 21-8 during the third quarter and defeated Franklin Pierce by nine points. Kendall Bird led White River, scoring 20 points and Georgia Lavinder added 13.
Bonney Lake 39, Auburn 23: The Panthers ran away with the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Trojans 11-6 to seal the victory. Payton Mitchell, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, led all scorers with 14 for Bonney Lake and Brooklyn Gratzer pitched in with 11.
Yelm 66, Stadium 42: Chloe Zimmerman led the Tornados to a 4A Narrows win by scoring a team-high 15 points, while teammate Hannah Hale had 11. The rout started early as Yelm were up at the end of the first quarter 19-9. The Tornados controlled the pace of the game, outscoring the Tigers, 16-8, during the third quarter.
Charles Wright Academy 62, Cascade Christian 59 (OT): Shoni Pritchett scored 34 points as the Tarriers outscored the Cougars 6-3 during the overtime period to win the game.
Annie Wright 43, Bush 41: Abbey Turner scored a team-high 14 points, Amhine Webb added 11 points as the Gators edged Bush.
Fife 59, Washington 19: Christina Willis scored a team-high 20 points, Carlie Kilcup added 15 points and the Trojans held the Patriots to five points during the first half en route to the victory.
Wilson 77, Foss 16: Kiki Knox scored a game-high 23 points, Josie Matz had 16, and Kiara McMillian 14 as the Rams outscored the Falcons 35-6 during the first quarter en route to the win.
