High school sports roundup for Saturday, Jan. 9

BOYS BASKETBALL

Spanaway Lake walked out of the Puyallup High School gym with an upset win over the Vikings, defeating them 67-62.

Puyallup outscored Spanaway Lake, 30-25, during the first half but the lead proved to be too little. The Sentinels came back in the second half and outscored the Vikings, 42-30, for the upset.

The Sentinels were led by sophomore wing Isiah Turner, who scored 22 points, Jeremiah Williams pitched in with 15, and Divante Moffitt had 14.

Deven Ness scored 26 points and Tony Gutierrez added 16 for Puyallup.

Sumner 57, White River 50: The Class 3A Spartans defeated the Class 2A Hornets as they outscored White River in all quarters but the fourth, when they were outscored 16-15. Sumner was led by Dawson Cutright, who had 15 points, Seth Carnahan had nine points and Austin Avey chipped in eight. Alex Wallen scored 15 points and Ryan Larsen had 12 for the Hornets despite the loss.

Curtis 59, Rogers 38: The Vikings outscored the Rams, 21-7, in the first quarter and they did not drop a single period. Aushanti Potts-Woods scored a game-high 21 points, Glenn Jordan had 16 for the Viking. The highest scorer for the Rams was Daniel O’Brien, who had 12 points.

Eatonville 54, Forks 50: Ray Springer scored 16 points to lead the Cruisers to victory. Eatonville outscored the Spartans, 16-5, after falling behind 16-11 during the first quarter. The Cruisers were outscored 16-13 during the fourth quarter but held on for the close victory.

Emerald Ridge 50, Bethel 37: The Jaguars only allowed the Braves to score 10 points during the first half in the victory. Chase McGuire scored 12 points and was the leading scorer for Emerald Ridge. Jason Cassens had 11 for the Jaguars, who won every quarter but the third, where they were outscored 11-10.

West Seattle 64, Stadium 39: The Tigers let the game get out of hand in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 22-7 after heading into the quarter with a 42-32 lead. Stadium was led by Demachae Booth, who scored 10 points.

Aberdeen 52, Charles Wright Academy 32: The Tarriers took the loss after being outscored 35-20 in the first half by Aberdeen. Alex Meadowcroft was the leading scorer for Charles Wright with nine points and Henry Cheney chipped in seven.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bethel 38, Emerald Ridge 29: The Braves outscored the Jaguars during the fourth quarter, 14-7, to seal the victory. In a low scoring game, Bethel sophomore guard Tianna Brown was the focal point, scoring 19 points.

Puyallup 47, Spanaway Lake 24: The Vikings took a 31-22 lead into the fourth quarter, and that’s when they surged ahead outscoring the Sentinels — a 4A SPSL opponent — 16-2, sealing the win. Hannah McCann scored 11 points and Sophie DeWitt and Rachael Allen had six points apiece for Puyallup.

Kentlake 57, Jefferson 18: The Falcons outscored the Raiders in all four quarters to win in a rout. Sydney Peterson was the leading scorer for Kentlake with 12 points.

Charles Wright Academy 63, Aberdeen 42: The Tarriers outscored the Bobcats 17-8 during the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Guard Shoni Pritchett scored a game-high 20 points and Majestic Moler chipped in with 19 points for Charles Wright.

Todd Beamer 82, Kentwood 24: Nia Alexander scored 20 points, Darion Brown and Makenna Woodfolk chipped in with 14 apiece as the Titans opened the first quarter with a 28-4 run en route to a victory over the Conquerors.

BOYS SWIMMING

Sumner’s Rafael Rodriguez won the West Central District 3 Dive Qualifying Meet, posting a state qualifying score of 363.95 points. Rodriguez, a sophomore and the only Spartans diver listed, defeated South Kitsap’s Jason Gleason (362.15) by one point to get the victory.
