High school sports roundup for Jan. 12
BOYS BASKETBALL
Steilacoom’s boys basketball team rode on the back of King Able during the fourth quarter to edge out a win against the Clover Park Warriors 59-56 in a game held at Steilacoom high school.
Able scored 12 — all of his points — of the Sentinels 16 points during the fourth quarter and sealed a 14-point comeback. “We were down 14 in third and came back, Robbion Harris had nine points to bring us back, Able got all 12 in the fourth,” said Steilacoom head coach Gary Wusterbarth.
Harris finished the game with 14 points, and LaJon Enis-Carter showed off his talent again, scoring a game-high 22.
White River 52, Fife 50: The Hornets let the Trojans creep back into the game during the fourth period. Leading 41-35 at the end of the third the Trojans went on to outscore the Hornets 15-12 during the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as White River held on for the two-point win.
Fife head coach Mark Schelbert, upset about the loss, said, “it was up for grabs on both teams, they made some extra plays and some free throws and we couldn’t capitalize.’
Eatonville 57, Rochester 29: The Cruisers led at the end of every period except the fourth, where they were outscored 17-13. They held the Warriors to just six points combined during the second and third quarters. 6-foot-4 junior Carson Hutchings was the leading scorer for the Cruisers with 12 points.
Peninsula 77, Lakes 51: The Kingman brothers had themselves a night against the Lancers. Both of them managed to record a double-double as the Seahawks defeated the Lancers by 26 points. Austin Kingman scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while his brother, Garret Kingman scored 14 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Kingmans aren’t the only brotherly duo for the Seahawks, JaQuori (12) and Elijah (8) McLaughlin combined for 20 points.
Washington 52, Franklin Pierce 36: It was a 37-13 run during the second half that separated the Patriots from the Cardinals as Washington won by 16.Kaleb Whitemarsh was the leading scorer for the Patriots with 12.
Rogers 57, Bethel 47: The fourth quarter made all the difference for the Rams as they defeated the Braves by 10 points. During the fourth, the Rams outscored the Braves 29-9. It was a rather close match-up between the two SPSL South league members, heading into the fourth the Braves had a 38- 37 lead, but could not hold on. Senior post Daniel O’Brien had 19 points and led the Rams to a victory.
Emerald Ridge 59, Graham-Kapowsin 36: The Jaguars defeated the Eagles during every period of Tuesday night’s game, outscoring them 35-9 in the second and third quarters. Donald Bango led the Jaguars with a 19-point outing, which was also a game high. Jason Cassens also had 13 for E-R.
Tumwater 72, W.F. West 52: The T-Birds won every period Tuesday night and defeated the Bearcats by 20 points. Ty Gentry scored a game high 28 points for the T-Birds, and led all scorers in the blowout win. Despite the loss, Luke Schwarz scored 20 points for the Bearcats.
River Ridge 77, Orting 30: The Hawks left the Cardinals scoreless during the fourth period and defeated them by 47-points. The Hawks scored 20 points in each of the first three periods in the game and were led by senior guard Jaden White, who scored 17. Issiah Scott also scored 12, Kobe Key, Tre’vonne Dorfner, and Mac Armstrong all had 11 for the Hawks.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kiki Knox led the Wilson Rams to a nail-biting 68-64 win against the Wenatchee Panthers on their home court.
Knox had 36, a game-high, Josie Matz also had 17. In a back and fourth game Wilson came out victorious after defeating the Panthers in the fourth 15-12.
Rogers 39, Bethel 34: After being down 32-22 at the end of the third quarter the Rams needed a spark. That’s exactly what they got in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Braves 17-2 to defeat them by five points. The Ram win was made largely because of Jessi Westering’s 24-point performance, a game-high.
Bonney Lake 64, Sumner 49: The Panthers pulled out a win against their rival in part of outscoring the Spartans 20-4 during the second period. The Panthers won by 15 and were led by senior guard Brookyln Gratzer, who had 16 points and five assist sin the game. Payton Mitchell scored 12 and also had eight assists for the Panthers.
Joy Mahnken scored 26, a game-high for the Spartans during the loss.
Todd Beamer 39, Kentridge 27: The Titans outscored the Chargers 29-8 in the second half to get a 12-point victory. Nia Alexander led the Titans with 12 points, Makenna Woodfolk had 11.
White River 59, Fife 36: The Hornets outscored the Trojans 32-15 in the second half, defeating the Trojans by 23 points. Kendall Bird led the Hornets with 19 points, senior guard, Sydney Andersen had 11.
Auburn Mountainview 47, Enumclaw 38: Taylor Flores had 19 points for the Lions as they defeated the Hornets by nine points. The difference in the game came during the second quarter, where the Lions outscored the Hornets 12-6.
Curtis 55, Spanaway Lake 17: The Sentinels did not score more than five points during any period of the game. The Vikings were led by Kaelin Williams-Kennedy (14), and Peightyn Perrien (13).
BOYS SWIMMING
It came down to the final relay as Gig Harbor took on the home team Wilson and defeated them 95-91.
“Its fun to have a close meet, it was really close; it came down to final relay and G-H won it, the fans are standing and cheering, its a different atmosphere, its a good competition for the kids,” said Wilson head coach Don Higgins.
During this meet two swimmers swam a state time, Chris Harkness swam the 500 free in four minutes 54.10 seconds for Wilson. Ryan Grady also posted a state time for the Tides in the 500 free, posting a time of four minutes, 59.20 seconds.
Olympia 112, Kelso 58: The Bears continue their undefeated season after getting their ninth win against Kelso Tuesday afternoon.
Puyallup, 110, Emerald Ridge 60: The Vikings surged past the Jaguars — a SPSL South opponent — winning eight of the 12 events that were held.
Steilacoom 98, Enumclaw 88: Seth Koivisto posted a state qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a winning time of one minute, 6.43 seconds.
North Thurston 125, Foss 38: The Rams won all 12 events to torch the Falcons in a Narrows League match-up.
Curtis 149, Rogers 34: The Vikings ran the table, winning every event against their SPSL league member the Vikings. Sam Abbott won the 200 free (1:48.04), and the 100 fly (54.77) for the Vikings.
