Prep roundup: Sumner stuns No. 4 Peninsula, hands Seahawks their first loss, 60-50

Down goes Peninsula.
Sumner defeated the previously unbeaten and fourth-ranked Seahawks, 60-50, Tuesday night at Sumner High School.
JaQuori McLaughlin scored 16 for Peninsula, but the tough defense of Austin Avey kept a lid on the Oregon State signee, frustrating him offensively all night.
“We had challenges guarding McLaughlin,” said Sumner coach Brett McDaniel, “We did our best to defend him, we held him to four field goals. Avey was solely responsible for the defense on McLaughlin, he just took on that responsibility. He is a hard-nosed kid, just did the best that he could.”
Peninsula (14-1; 9-1 3A SPSL) was the only remaining unbeaten team in the 3A classification until Tuesday.
It was a team effort for Sumner (11-4; 5-4), which has won eight of its past nine games, but McDaniel gave a lot of credit to Seth Carnahan, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds. And he helped limit Peninsula’s standout post, Jimmie Ritchie, to eight points.
“He had a huge night,” McDaniel said.
Taylor Walker played his first game after suffering a concussion and scored 14 off the bench, four of them coming from long range 3-pointers.
“It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime type games,” McDaniel said. “We’ve never had a game like this. It’s a big deal for us. A huge deal for our kids to reap the rewards of their hard work.”
Sumner will travel to play Lakes while the Seahawks will face Auburn at home on Jan. 22.
Enumclaw 73, Auburn 67: The Hornets defeated the Trojans on their home court, outscoring them 20-16 during the fourth to seal the win. Auburn had a 38-32 lead at halftime but watched it disappear late. Justus Rainwater led Enumclaw with 23 points while Scotty Garvin chipped in 19.
Auburn Mountainview 48, Auburn Riverside 41: The Lions edged out the Ravens during a crosstown rival game that was held at Auburn Riverside. The Lions outscored the Ravens in all three quarters after being outscored 16-12 during the first. Tristan Miguel led the way for Auburn Mountainview with 15 points. Quintin Bethea’s 26 points was over half of Auburn Riverside’s total for the game.
Steilacoom 52, Fife 44: The Sentinels held on despite being outscored 18-5 in the fourth quarter. Steilacoom had its fair share of runs in the game as well, outscoring Fife, 23-5 in the second period to build its lead. King Able scored 15 points to lead the Sentinels.
Puyallup 45, Bethel 32: Jaden Vollmen scored 16 points to lead the Vikings over the SPSL South opponent Braves. Puyallyp outscored Bethel 16-6 in the first quarter and kept rolling for the victory.
Spanaway Lake 58, Graham-Kapowsin 50: The Sentinels marched into Eagle territory and pulled out an eight point win against their SPSL South league member. In a relatively tight game Isaiah Turner led the Sentinels with 12 points, Spencer Lemisio and Leroy Lawrence both scored 11.
Aberdeen 66, Eatonville 58: The Cruisers were down 41-23 at halftime and couldn’t make up the difference in a loss the Bobcats. Eatonville came back in the second quarter, outscoring Aberdeen in both the third and the fourth quarter, but still lost by eight points.
Tumwater 63, Centralia 44: Ty Gentry scored a game-high 19 points to lead the T-Birds over the Tigers. Tumwater outscored Centralia, 31-15, during the first half.
Lakes 63, Bonney Lake 43: The Lancers outscored the Panthers, 15-4, during the first quarter and 21-12 during the third quarter en route to a win. Rakeem Hughey scored a game-high 18 points for Lakes.
Washington 82, Orting 61: The Patriots went on a 25-11 run to open up the game and never let up en route to victory.. During the first two quarters the Cardinals could not get within nine points of the Patriots in either quarter. Donovan Thomas, a 6-foot-5 forward, scored 16 points, Alijah Maddox and Stephon Scott both chipped in with 13 points for Washington.
Life Christian 79, Tacoma Baptist 24: The Eagles only allowed eight points the entire first half en route to a win over the Crusades. Junior shooting guard Anthony Kunitsa scored a game-high 23 points for Life Christian.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Steilacoom could not complete a comeback on the road and fell to Fife, 38-35.
Tied after the third quarter, the Trojans outscored the Sentinels, 12-9, to finish the game. The win was Fife’s seventh of the season. Amaya Yukish was the leading scorer for the Trojans with 12 points, Christina Willis had 10, and Carlie Kilcup added eight.
Kentridge 32, Tahoma 29: The Chargers edged the Bears in a tight Northeast SPSL match-up, which was held at Kentridge. Tresai McCarver was the leading scorer in a low-scoring game with 10 points.
Todd Beamer 49, Kentlake 44: Nia Alexander scored 17 points and was the leading scorer for the Titans as they defeated the Falcons by five points. The Titans outscored the Falcons 16-11 during the third quarter to separate themselves to solidify a win.
Spanaway Lake 53, Graham-Kapowsin 46: Jackie Gutierrez put up a double-double: 17 points and 27 rebounds as the Sentinels defeated the Eagles -- an SPSL South league member-- by six points. Karlee Ruffin had five points, 18 rebounds and three steals for the Sentinels as well.
Centralia 46, Tumwater 41: The Tigers came back and defeated the T-Birds during the fourth quarter, outscoring them 25-11 to get a five-point victory. Sierra Snyder scored 13 and led the T-Birds, Mackenzie Bergquist also had 12 in the loss.
Bonney Lake 48, Lakes 34: The Panthers scored 28 to the Lancers 16 in the second half and ended up defeating them by 12. Brooklyn Gratzer recorded a double-double for the Panthers with a team-high 16 points,10 rebounds,
River Ridge 50, Franklin Pierce 36: Makenna Schultz scored over half of the Hawks’ points as they defeated the Cardinals by 14. Schultz had 27 and was extremely effective during the first and third quarters, where the Hawks outscored the Cardinals 37-23. Alexius Foster was the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 14 points.
Auburn Riverside 52, Auburn Mountainview 35: The Ravens went on a 20-6 run during the second period and gained some much needed momentum after ending the first quarter tied at 11. McKenzi Williams scored a game-high 19 points and led the charge for the Ravens as they won by 18 points.
Tacoma Baptist 40, Life Christian 33: The Crusaders outscored the Eagles 16-10 in the fourth period to win by seven. Brooklyn Pascua scored 18 and led the game in scoring. Rachel VanLiew recorded a double-double: 10 points, 14 rebounds for the Crusaders as well.
Bethel 50, Puyallup 40: The Braves won by 10 on their home court against the Vikings. It was a family affair as Bethel head coach John Ainslie faced his niece, Cherokee Ainslie, for the first time in their coaching career. Tianna Brown was the leading scorer for the game with 23 points.
