High school sports roundup for Fri., Jan. 22
BOYS BASKETBALL
The North Thurston Rams could not pull off a victory on their home court over the Wilson Rams as they lost in nail-biting fashion 66-65.
“It was a very exciting game,” said NT head coach Tim Brown, “both team battled, we kept coming back, we made it decent, they would push it out up to 9, but we tied it up.” Kyle Stone --who scored 23 points-- was on fire from three for the Rams, he went 7-for-10 from the perimeter and had a chance to win the game at the end but could not convert.
David Jenkins Jr. had another 20+ point night for the Rams, as he scored 27 Friday. Emmitt Matthews Jr also scored 15 for the Rams. The games leading scorer was NT’s Wes Reynolds, who scored 26.
Timberline 73, South Kitsap 67 (OT): It took an extra period to decide this 4A Narrows league match-up as both defenses were too stingy to give up the final bucket during regulation time.
The Blazers outscored the Wolves 9-3 in the overtime period to seal a six-point victory, their 11th on the season (11-5). Erik Stevenson led all scorers, scoring 18 for the Blazers.
Auburn Riverside 63, Enumclaw 61: The Ravens held off the Hornets, defeating them by two in a tightly 2A/3A SPSL match-up.
The Ravens had a five point lead with less than 10 seconds to play, the Hornets drove the ball down the court and nailed a three to put them down two with seconds to go. With no timeouts the clock continued to run, resulting in a Raven victory.
Senior post Quintin Bethea was the leading scorer for the Ravens with 17. The leading scorer on the night was Hornet Josh Erickson, who scored 24.
Mount Tahoma 65, Capital 60: A 36-point outing from Travis Miller was not enough to get a win as the Cougars fell to the T-Birds by five points.
Outscored 21-11 in the third the T-Birds could not hold onto the lead they built in the first half, where they led 33-30. “The guys finally came down the stretch and put together 4 quarters and we won the game,” said MT head coach Jason Townsend.
Clover Park 65, Franklin Pierce 57: The Warriors outscored the Cardinals 21-13 during the second period to get a eight point victory. Dakari Jefferson scored 17 for the Warriors and was the games leading scorer.
Lakes 79, Sumner 55: After a thrilling 10-point victory over 4th-ranked Peninsula on Tuesday the Spartans could not pull out a win as they faced the Lancers on the road.
After a tight first quarter, where Sumner led 17-15 the Lancers heated up and did not give up the lead the remainder of the game, outscoring the Spartans in the remaining three periods. Rakeem Hughey was the games leading scorer with 22 for the Lancers.
Curtis 65, Bethel 54: The Vikings proved they could finish a half strong as they outscored the Braves 21-11 in the second and 19-12 in the fourth to secure a nine-point victory.
Glenn Jordan scored 17 and was the Vikings’ leading scorer. Aushanti Potts-Woods chipped in with 16 during the win as well. The leading scorer on the night was Bethel’s Brian Shaffer, who scored 18 points.
Gig Harbor 54, Yelm 57: It was a tight game in all quarters but the third, where the Tides gained the majority of their lead, outscoring the Tornados 21-10.
After a tight ending in the second quarter (30-27 Gig Harbor) the Tides opened the flood gates. They were led by Sam Gagliardi, who scored a game-high 20 points.
Peninsula 68, Auburn 41: Austin Kingman and Jaquori McLaughlin recorded double-doubles for the Seahawks as they defeated the Trojans by 27 points.
Kingman racked up 24 points and 11 rebounds and was the games leading scorer. McLaughlin had 13 points, 12 assists.
Spanaway Lake 66, Emerald Ridge 50: Home court treated the Sentinels well. Ranked fourth in the SPSL South they routed the second-ranked Jaguars, defeating them by 16.
Most of the Sentinel damage was done in the second period where they outscored they Jags 19-6. Divante Moffitt scored 15 for the Sentinels and led all scorers.
Ocosta 64, Tacoma Baptist 59: Sophomore TJ Talen scored 24 points for the Crusaders but it wasn’t enough. The Wildcats separated themselves from the Crusaders by outscoring the them 13-7 in the second period.
Auburn Mountainview 66, Bonney Lake 39: The Lions outscored the Panthers 37-20 during the first half and outscored them by 27 to win the game.
Ryan Lacey scored 27, tripling the amount of the highest scorer for the Panthers.
Federal Way 85, Mount Rainier 39: Ferron Flavors led the offensive charge for the Eagles, scoring a game-high 22 points. The Eagles won decisively defeating the Rams by 46 points.
The Eagles led at the end of every quarter except the third, they outscored the Rams 57-18 during the first half. Etan Collins recorded a double-double for the Eagles: 10 points, 11 rebounds.
Prairie 62, Tumwater 44: The Falcons opened up the game on a 23-7 run and defeated the T-Birds by 18 to get their 12th win on the season (12-4).
Ty Gentry was the leading scorer for the T-Birds with 13. No other T-Bird scored over nine points during the loss.
Evergreen 63, Mount Rainier Lutheran 45: The Wolverines pulled away late, outscoring the Hawks 34-22 during the second half to secure a 18-point victory.
Mount Rainier Lutheran post Aaron Bailey was the games’ leading scorer with 16 points.
BOYS SWIMMING
Seamus Grant and the Stadium boys swim team earned the road victory over Gig Harbor High School by a score of 116 to 75 on Friday.
Grant was a winner in four separate events that were all freestyle, ranging from 50 to 100 yards and 200 to 400 yards in a relay.
Dawson Allen and Ryan Grady were the only two winners from the Tides as Allen won the 200 freestyle and Grady the 500 freestyle.
BOYS WRESTLING
The Puyallup boys wrestling team defeated visiting Graham-Kapowsin High School 44-30 on Friday.
Several Viking wrestlers won their matches, including Braden Goucher (106 lbs.), Keegan Anderson (113), Hunter Godwin (120), Josh Franich (138), Spencer Hanson (152), Nolan Martinez (160), Tucker Hanson (170) and Collin Scott (220).
The Eagles winners were Mason Eaglin (126 lbs.), Lane Holland (132), Gavin Eaglin (145), Austin Kristoph (182), Chris Sparks (195), Connor White-Shrum (285).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
It was a tough contest, but to the victor go the spoils as the Federal Way girls basketball team defeated Mount Rainier High School 42-38 on the road on Friday.
The leading scorer for the Eagles was Selina Mayo as she put up 15 points on the night. Tatyana Reuter helped with eight points of her own.
The Rams’ leading players were Madison Lommen, scoring 13 points, and Ami Yoshino, scoring five points and coming up with 15 rebounds.
Life Christian 45, Willapa Valley 37: Alea Yun and Alyssa Donaldson were scoring in droves as they put up 14 and 12 respectively in the Eagles’ win over the Vikings.
Tacoma Baptist 46, Ocosta 38: Brooklyn Pascua of the Crusaders and Kristi Raffelson had a scoring duel as they each finished with over 15 points (Raffleson with 18), but it was the Crusaders that earned the victory.
Curtis 53, Bethel 43: The Vikings’ Jalaiya Frederick scored 16 points en route to the home victory over the Braves.
White River 62, River Ridge 51: Kendall Bird led all scores as she led the Hornets with a stellar performance by putting up 28 points in the home victory over the Hawks.
Sumner 59, Lakes 43: Despite the loss, Mallory LaPoole of the Lancers was a scoring machine as she put up 26 points on the night.
Kentlake 46, Tahoma 28: The Falcons had a strong, fundamental win over the Bears as several players scored at least eight points, including Kylee Johnson leading with 13.
Prairie 65, Tumwater 24: Sierra Snyder was responsible for more than half of her team’s scoring as she netted 14 points on the night.
Wilson 82, North Thurston 34: Josie Matz and Erica Hamlin were on fire for the Rams as Matz scored 25 and Hamlin 19, cranking out a victory.
Gig Harbor 63, Yelm 27: Brynna Maxwell’s 16 points were more than enough to help the Tides, but Sydney Bertholf’s six points, eight rebounds and six steals were a welcome help as well.
Olympia 48, Stadium 18: All of Jenna Randich’s 25 points came in the first half in the Bears’ victory over the Tigers.
Lincoln 64, Foss 17: Shawndreia Brown was the leading scorer for the Lady Abes as her 17 points was more than enough for the victory over the Falcons.
Fife 50, Orting 17: Christina Willis’ 21 points and Carlie Kilcup’s 13 were a strong combo to earn the win over the Cardinals.
Steilacoom 37, Washington 18: The Sentinels’ Taylor Stowers scored 12 points and Nanalia Wagoner scored 10 in their victory over the Patriots.
Vashon 48, Charles Wright Academy 34: Shoni Pritchett of the Tarriers was a force on the court with 14 points and 10 rebounds, despite the loss to the Pirates.
