Tahoma strikes early, shuts out Olympia

It took 15 minutes too long for the Olympia High School boys soccer team to settle in.

And Tahoma’s Robby Guyer made sure the Bears knew it.

He scored the match’s only two goals on at Ingersoll Stadium as Tahoma shut out Olympia, 2-0, in nonleague play.

“Some coaches like to get the cupcake games,” Olympia coach Ty Johnson said. “I want to play the teams we could see at state, because it’s only going to make these guys better. We’re in a tough enough league, so you play these teams early, it’s going to make you better for when you play the Gig Harbors and the Bellarmines and the Stadiums coming up.”

Both Tahoma and Olympia advanced to the Class 4A state tournament last season, though neither placed.

Olympia was disjointed early in Tuesday night’s match, with regular starters Neil Boyal – The Olympian’s 2015 All-Area player of the year – and Mitchell Nee absent from the lineup.

Guyer netted the game-winner in the 8th minute. He then took a long cross in the 15th minute, and headed the dagger into the right-hand corner.

“The boys decided after that second goal, ‘Hey, we can play with them,’” Johnson said. “I think, going forward, it’s going to be huge for them in the league that we’re in.”

Possession evened out in the second half and Olympia threatened on a few trips down the field, but couldn’t put together an offensive answer.

Tahoma (4-0), has outscored opponents 16-1 so far this season and posted three shutouts. Olympia drops to 1-1-1 and begins the bulk of 4A Narrows League play when it hosts Timberline at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Ingersoll.

“With missing a lot of our key players it was nice to see who can play where, who can do what,” senior Ian Hesse said. “Given that we played these guys early, I think we have a lot of stuff to look forward to.”
