W.F. West softball sweeps Selah in nonleague doubleheader

The stage was a bit grander on Saturday, but the outcome was typical for the W.F. West High School softball team.

Behind 24 runs on 28 hits, the Bearcats swept Selah in a nonleague doubleheader at Husky Softball Stadium at the University of Washington.

“We did bring the bats with us, we swung it pretty good,” W.F. West coach Mike Keen said. “We were getting a lot of hits with two strikes or two outs, I love that.”

The Bearcats put up five runs in both the second and fifth innings in the first game to finish off Selah, 14-2, in five innings.

Kindra Davis’ deep solo home run to left center kicked off the top of the fifth. She finished 2 for 3 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs.

“I’ve been on this field before and it was just so nice to come back,” Davis said. “We took advantage of the opportunities we got.”

W.F. West finished a combined 16 of 32 (.500) at the plate with seven extra base hits in the opener.

Ashlee Vadala accounted for two of those hits with two doubles and two RBIs. Lexie Strasser finished 4 for 4 with a double and three runs scored.

“We work so hard in the cages and it just pays off every game. We’re swinging so well right now and it’s awesome.”

Vadala also pitched a 1-hitter while striking out three. Neither of Selah’s two runs were earned.

W.F. West 10, Selah 5: The score is somewhat deceiving. The Bearcats controlled the pace the entire way.

Selah took advantage of some fatigue in the seventh, adding three late runs, but W.F. West regrouped to end it.

Strasser picked up the win, allowing five runs on seven hits. She struck out three, and put out nine batters by fielding balls that were hit back to her.

“Both pitchers go the distance — that’s good,” Keen said. “When they were both in the groove, I didn’t want to make a change.”

Davis ripped another two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the seventh to give the Bearcats some cushion. She also knocked a double off of the wall in right center to start a two-run inning in the sixth. Kyndra Haller hit a triple to left on the next at-bat to drive Davis in.

The Bearcats put up at least one run in five of the seven innings played in the second game eclipsing Selah, which only got runners across the plate in the second and seventh.

Vadala’s hot bat continued with a triple in the top of the first that drove in Haller.

“We’re fitting in, we’re getting to know each other really well, and we’re doing everything we should be,” Davis said.
