Prep roundup: South Kitsap baseball beats Graham-Kapowsin, 8-5
BASEBALL
Top performer: Jordan Jones, Kentwood, junior
W, 5.2 IP, 6 H, R, 9 K in win over Tahoma to take over conference lead
South Kitsap 8, Graham-Kapowsin 5: Hunter Riley’s home run vaulted South Kitsap (4A Narrows) over Graham-Kapowsin (4A SPSL South), despite being outhit.
The Eagles took over the game with a huge second inning where it scored seven runs to take a commanding early lead. That’s where Riley hit his home run, finishing 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs.
The Sentinels were able to muster some offense though, out hitting South Kitsap eight to seven despite losing by three. Cole Chambers had two doubles, two RBIs and scored twice.
Mount Rainier 11, Jefferson 2: Behind a strong pitching effort from Jared Scott, the Rams (4A SPSL Northwest) managed to take down the Raiders (4A SPSL Northwest).
Jefferson was able to muster some hits on Scott with 8 in the game. However, Scott minimized the damage and held Jefferson to just two runs in a complete game, where he struck out six.
He had plenty of offense at his back. Mount Rainier scored 10 runs in the first three innings and was able to coast from there. Nicholas Dammeier did well going 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI.
Kentwood 8, Tahoma 1: In a rubber match between the Bears (4A SPSL Northeast) and the Conquerors (4A SPSL Northeast), Jordan Jones’ silencing of Tahoma’s bats led Kentwood to a victory.
Tahoma scored 10 and 11 runs in the previous two games, but Jones was in control and held them to just one. He threw 5 2/3 innings and struck out nine, while allowing just six hits.
The thump from Kentwood’s bats came from Matt Franceschina, who drove in three runs on a 1 for 3 afternoon.
Kentridge 7, Kentlake 2: In a rivalry match between the Chargers (4A SPSL Northeast) and the Falcons (4A SPSL Northeast), the solid pitching day from Ted Dominguez tipped the scales in favor of Kentridge.
Dominguez delivered a strong outing and gave Kentridge a chance to win. He went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
It took a few innings for the Chargers to take control. They were behind 1-0 entering the fourth when they took a one-run lead. Five runs in the final two innings gave them the breathing room they wanted.
Trent Jackson had a nice day for Kentridge, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Auburn Mountainview 9, Auburn Riverside 3: In the battle for Auburn, Mountainview (3A SPSL) came out on top, scoring early runs that Riverside (3A SPSL) could not topple.
The Lions scored six runs in the first two innings, setting the tone for the game and putting the Ravens in an early hole. James Kisling drove in three runs in the game for Auburn Mountainview on a 2 for 2 day.
Kyle Bates had a two-RBI hit in the fourth that produced most of Auburn Riverside’s offense for the day.
Mount Rainier Lutheran 15, Evergreen Lutheran 13: There was no shortage of runs in this matchup between the Eagles and the Hawks, with Mount Rainier grabbing two runs in the final frame to capture the win.
Leading the way for Mount Rainier Lutheran was Jack Shannon, who went 2 for 5 with a triple and two runs batted in. The triple was hit on a rope and was just inches short of leaving the ballpark.
For Evergreen Lutheran, Seth Birsching racked up four RBIs and a triple on a 2 for 3 day.
GIRLS TENNIS
Top performer: Alison Wood, North Thurston, senior
Defeated opponent 6-0, 6-0
Emerald Ridge 3, Bethel 2: Emerald Ridge (4A SPSL South) improved its conference record and is clawing toward the top of the standings following its win over Bethel (4A SPSL South).
The Jaguars came out firing in singles play. Kara Hokenstad and Roanne Ordinallo rolled over their respective opponents, winning in straight sets.
Bethel performed better in doubles play, snatching two of the three matches in straight sets.
North Thurston 3, Lincoln 2: In a battle of 3A heavyweights, North Thurston (3A Narrows) took sole control of the standings with its win over Lincoln (3A Narrows).
It was the first conference loss for the Abes, and it came from its losses in singles play. The Rams’ Ainsley Winterrowd and Alison Wood both won handily, losing only one combined game.
Lincoln had more luck in doubles play, where they took two of the three matches.
Puyallup 3, Rogers 2: The Vikings (4A SPSL South) did their part to distance themselves from the Rams (4A SPSL South) in the conference standings with a 3-2 win.
Puyallup rolled in singles play, winning both matches. Shelby Scott and Adrianna Boyce both won in straight sets.
Rogers did strike back with a couple wins in doubles play.
The win also helps Puyallup keep pace with Graham-Kapowsin, who are at the top of the standings and won tonight.
Auburn Mountainview 4, Lakes 1: The Lions (3A SPSL) continue to build an impressive conference record, this time taking down the Lancers (3A SPSL) in a big win.
Singles play was split between the two squads. Auburn Mountainview’s Angie Andreotti got the win in three sets, while Geomari Nicolo got the win for Lakes in similar fashion.
Doubles play is where the Lions took control, winning all three matches handily. They lost only six games in the three matches.
