Track and field: Braverman adds to list of top-10 marks in state
River Ridge’s Josh Braverman reeled in another top-10 time this week.
He posted a 22.21 in the 200 on Thursday at Orting — the ninth-best time in Washington state in any classification, and second-best time in 2A. It was his first time competing in the event this season.
Braverman, a junior, already owns the No. 1 ranking in any classification in the 300-meter hurdles (28.25 seconds), and is third-best in the 110 hurdles (14.24). He’s also tied for third in the long jump (22 feet, 5 inches). He’s the top-ranked athlete in all three of those events in 2A.
Northwest Christian’s Heidi Sowers landed a pair of new 2B bests at the King’s Invitational on Saturday. Sowers ran a 47.14 in the 300 hurdles to nab the top spot in front of teammate Megan McSheffrey, who sits 0.55 seconds behind her at No. 2. The Navigators’ 4x400 relay team, consisting of Qi Han, Sowers, Elizabeth Stottlemyre and McSheffrey, also recorded a new 2B best at 4:13.23.
Another new 2B best was set Saturday, but Brayden Lasher just reset his own top mark. The Rainier junior upset W.F. West’s Beau Stidham at the Chehalis Activators Invitational in pole vault with a jump of 13-6 — six inches higher than his previous best. Shelton’s Cody Simon also jumped 13-6 on Wednesday at Capital to even Lasher as the top-ranked pole vaulter in the area. Simon is in a three-way tie for ninth in 3A.
Capital’s Zach Smith also climbed in the 3A rankings at his home track on Wednesday. He broke into a three-way tie for 10th in 3A in the 100, posting a 11.09. He also ran a leg of Capital’s 4x100 relay team — consisting of Willie Broxton, Tim Fisher, Smith and Jason Turner — which set a new season-best at 43.73. That squad is now ranked sixth in 3A.
River Ridge’s Jordan Skipper-Brown beat his previous best in high jump by two inches on Thursday at Orting. He topped out at 6-6, which ties him for the third-best height in 2A and 12th-best in any classification.
Three athletes set new area bests Wednesday at Yelm, when the Tornados hosted Olympia and Timberline. Olympia senior David Woodward’s throw of 183-5 in the javelin launched him to No. 5 in the state and No. 2 in 4A. Yelm’s Princess Sullivan also set a new personal-best in the 200 at 26.27. And, Yelm freshman Carissa Stovall beat her personal best by nearly five feet in the discus, recording a 115. That’s the eighth-best distance in 4A.
The Tumwater girls 4x200 relay team improved to seventh in 2A with a win at the Chehalis Activators Invitational on Saturday. Sydney Smith, Codi Short, Peyton Russell and Bella Foos combined to run a season-best 1:48.6.
