High school sports roundup for April 25
BASEBALL
Top performer: Michael Toglia, Gig Harbor, senior
2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R; 6 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 K, win.
Gig Harbor 7, Olympia 3: It’s not often that one player can singlehandedly lead his team to victory. In a matchup between the Tides (12-4, 8-1 4A Narrows) and the Bears (11-5, 7-4 4A Narrows), UCLA commit Michael Toglia was that player.
From the plate, Toglia smashed two home runs and drove in four runs for Gig Harbor. From the mound, he tossed six innings of three-run baseball, allowing only two hits and striking out seven.
Gig Harbor took control of the game in the fifth inning, where they tagged Olympia for 5 runs. The Bears made a spirited comeback in the seventh inning, but could not overcome the Tides’ lead.
This win cements Gig Harbor at the top of the 4A Narrows standings, with Olympia now narrowly trailing.
Capital 4, North Thurston 0: An absolute gem of a game from the Cougars’ (10-6, 10-1 3A Narrows) Jacob Loose vaulted Capital over the rival Rams (8-9, 8-3 3A Narrows).
Loose was brutally efficient, throwing a one-hitter against North Thurston over seven innings of work. He struck out nine Rams and walked only one.
Cody Jenkins and Sam Condon provided the pop in Capital’s lineup, each going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jenkins also added a double.
Wilson 5, Foss 0: The Rams (9-7, 7-4, 3A Narrows) used small ball to tag the Falcons (2-14, 2-9 3A Narrows) for runs in four different innings in a convincing win.
Wilson scored one run in the first, followed by two in the second, and never looked back. This was in part due to strong pitching in a platoon effort. Four different pitchers saw action for the Rams. They combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed only three hits.
Offensively, Noah Hill performed well for Wilson. He went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Eatonville 11, Washington 5: The Goetz brothers combine to run the Cruisers (10-2, 10-1 1A Evergreen) past the Patriots (4-12, 3-8 2A SPSL) in a non-conference win.
TJ Goetz went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs, while his brother AJ went 1 for 2 with a couple more RBI and a run scored.
Eatonville went up big with a huge second inning where they tagged Washington for six runs. The Patriots clawed back with three runs in the third, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Central Kitsap 11, Mount Tahoma 0: It was a neat and tidy five-inning win for the Cougars (15-1, 10-1 3A Narrows) over the T-Birds (1-12, 1-10 3A Narrows), with a one-hitter from Aki Buckson as the bow on top.
Buckson threw all five innings and struck out nine while allowing just the one hit. He also went 1 for 3 from the plate with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
A litany of errors broke Mount Tahoma’s back in this game. They were credited with five errors. Every run for Central Kitsap was unearned due to errors.
Emerald Ridge 6, Bethel 1: The Jaguars (13-4, 7-2 4A SPSL South) played small ball and scored in five of this game’s seven innings in its win over the Braves (3-13, 3-7 4A SPSL South) This inches them closer to Puyallup at the top of the standings.
Chase Barbre took the mound for Emerald Ridge and did well for himself. He did allow seven hits, but minimized the damage to just one run. He also struck out six.
The Jaguars found offense from Cody Bentley, who went 2 for 2 with a couple RBIs.
For Bethel, Zach Neigel had a nice 3 for 3 night with a double and an RBI.
SOFTBALL
Top performer: Tally Thomas, Federal Way, junior
4-4, HR, 3B, 7 RBI, 3 R; 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R.
Federal Way 16, Mount Rainier 2: Federal Way (12-4, 12-4 4A SPSL North) got up early and never looked back in a shellacking of Mount Rainier (3-15, 2-14 4A SPSL North), led by a sterling performance from Tally Thomas.
Thomas was sensational at the plate. She went 4 for 4 on the day, blasting a home run and a triple. Furthermore, she drove in seven runs and scored three herself. She also got the win as the starting pitcher, throwing four innings and giving up only two runs.
The Eagles scored early and often against the Rams, scoring eight runs in the first two innings, then recording a big five run inning in the fourth.
Todd Beamer 16, Decatur 1: Behind a big day from Kenzie Palmer, the Titans (10-7, 9-6 4A SPSL North) easily took down the Golden Gators (5-12, 4-11 4A SPSL North) in a 4A SPSL clash.
Palmer was the start in this game with her hot bat. She went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a couple runs scored.
Todd Beamer was able to mostly coast after putting up five runs in the first and ten more in the second. The lone RBI came from Decatur’s Tatiana Jones, who went 1 for 1 in the five-inning contest.
GIRLS TENNIS
Top performer: Addy Paris, Fife
Defeated opponent 6-0, 6-0
Fife 4, Steilacoom 1: The Trojans (10-2, 10-2 3A SPSL) rolled over the Sentinels (4-8, 4-7 3A SPSL) on the strength of its singles play in a lopsided win.
Addy Paris and Samantha McElwain dominated their respective opponents, losing only one game between the two.
Steilacoom did strike one win in doubles play, with Fife taking the other two.
This win keeps Fife in second in the standings, only behind undefeated Franklin Pierce. Steilacoom remains in the middle of the pack.
Peninsula 3, Auburn Riverside 2: The Seahawks (3-7, 3-6 3A SPSL) managed to nip the Ravens (2-9, 2-8 3A SPSL)with a close win behind a sweep in singles play.
Allie Berry and Sasha Mayer did strong work, each winning their respective singles matches. Berry did not lose a game in her win.
Auburn Riverside evened the score with a couple wins in doubles play. However, Peninsula got the win with a doubles victory of its own.
