Prep roundup: Corey Ng helps Kentridge topple Graham-Kapowsin for chance to take eight seed

BASEBALL

7 IP, 3 H, R, 4 K, CG — in 4-1 win over Curtis

Kentridge 12, Graham-Kapowsin 2: The Chargers (9-12, 5-7 4A SPSL Northeast) will end up with a much higher seed after a dominating win over the Eagles (9-11, 6-6 4A SPSL South) behind Corey Ng’s bat.

Ng was a monster at the plate. He went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and four runs scored.

Kentridge jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and the Eagles were never able to catch up.

The Chargers advance to play Rogers at 4 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park in Puyallup. The winner will earn the eight seed in the 4A WCD tournament. The loser will be the 10 seed.

Graham-Kapowsin will play Curtis at 4 p.m. Friday in a loser-out game.

Kentlake 4, Curtis 1: This pressure matchup had big seeding implications, but that didn’t seem to faze the Falcons (9-12, 6-6 4A SPSL Northeast) as they soared to a win over the Vikings (11-9, 5-7 4A SPSL South).

The hero was Jordan Wright, who tossed a brilliant game. He went the distance, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Kentlake has a date with Mount Rainier, where the winner gets the seven seed while the loser takes the nine. First pitch of that game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park in Puyallup.

Curtis is in a win-or-go home situation with Graham-Kapowsin, where the winner takes the 11 seed and the loser’s season ends.

Life Christian 20, Ocosta 4: The Eagles (17-3, 12-0 2B Pacific) should have enjoyed the long trip home to Tacoma from Westport, as they locked up the number two seed in the 2B Pacific tournament with a win over the Wildcats (10-5, 8-4 2B Pacific).

Life Christian wrapped it up in five innings with a mammoth final frame, scoring 10 runs. Mike McKay went 2 for 4 with a triple, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Clover Park 5, Lakes 1: For the first time since May 7, 2014, the Warriors (1-17, 0-14 2A SPSL) picked up a win by beating the Lancers (0-17, 0-14 3A SPSL).

Theo Grutas pitched a gem, striking out nine over seven innings. Grutas allowed two walks and no earned runs.

SOFTBALL

Top performer: McKenzie Behnke, Orting, sophomore

5 IP, 0 H, 10 K — in 15-0 win over Washington

Yelm 3, Gig Harbor 2: A late rally by the Tornados (17-2, 12-0 4A Narrows), was aided by errors by the Tides (12-6, 8-3 4A Narrows).

The Tornados entered the seventh inning behind by a run. After two singles, two Gig Harbor errors allowed the tying run to score and put the go-ahead run at third. A wild pitch gave Neka Viveros her chance to score the crucial run.

In relief, Tayelyn Cutler got the win. She threw five scoreless innings and allowed one hit. She had nine strikeouts.

Orting 15, Washington 0: Cardinals (15-0, 11-0 2A SPSL) pitcher McKenzie Behnke no-hit the Patriots (3-11, 2-9 2A SPSL) in game one of a doubleheader.

Behnke pitched five innings, striking out 10. The Cardinals defense made one error.

Orting’s Tatum Tripp went 3 for 5, including a double and three RBIs. Elyssa Torrey also had a double, finishing 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Steilacoom 17, River Ridge 7: The Sentinels (9-4, 7-3 2A SPSL) dominated the Hawks (5-10, 3-8 2A SPS) with a flurry of early runs and a host of River Ridge errors.

Steilacoom chased the Hawks’ starter in the first inning with seven runs. The Sentinels scored another seven runs in the third en route to a five-inning victory.

River Ridge totaled seven errors. As a result, only eight of the 17 runs allowed were earned.

Steilacoom’s Rache Untalan went 2 for 4, with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Emerald Ridge 15, Spanaway Lake 1: The Jaguars (5-10, 4-8 4A SPSL South) had little trouble dispatching the Sentinels (2-16, 0-12 4A SPSL South) in a five-inning game.

Emerald Ridge scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. Haley Boutwell had a nice night, going 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Curtis 10, Bethel 9: A tightly contested game saw the Vikings (8-12, 6-6 4A SPSL South) defeat the Braves (5-11, 3-9 4A SPSL South).

The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Gabrielle Ginnis powered the Curtis offense by going 3 for 4 with a homer and six RBIs. Madi Kessling pitched the last three innings, allowing three earned runs off of three hits, and picked up the win.

For the Braves, Brittney Genuardi and Madi Pierce each went 2 for 5 and scored two runs.

Fife 3, White River 1: Anna Kasner was dominant and led the way in Fife’s (16-0, 12-0 2A SPSL) win over White River (7-9, 7-4 2A SPSL).

Kasner went the distance, allowing three hits with 16 strikeouts.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Top performer: Caity Craft, Auburn Mountainview

Enumclaw 11, Auburn Mountainview 7: The Hornets (8-2, 7-0 3A SPSL) won an underwater battle against the Lions (0-1, 0-1 3A SPSL).

Four Hornets stung the ball into the back of the net multiple times. Hannah Simurdak, Anna Davenport, Grace Sales and Grace Munnell had two goals apiece.

But a Lions player came away with the highest goal total on the evening. Caity Craft scored three goals, while Autumn Hildebrand contributed two.
