Prep roundup: Noah Sirkel’s sacrifice fly keeps Tumwater’s season alive

BASEBALL

7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 10 K — in 7-3 win over Thomas Jefferson

Tumwater 5, Hudson’s Bay 4: With their season on the line, the Thunderbirds (10-8) came up with a huge late rally to defeat the Eagles (9-11).

The game-winning run came with the score tied in the seventh inning. With an 0-2 count, Noah Sirkel hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field after Jacob Dardano was intentionally walked.

Tumwater was behind 4-0 entering the fifth inning. However, they managed to claw their way back with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.

The Thunderbirds now advance in the 2A Southwest District tournament to play Ridgefield.

Rogers 6, Kentridge 2: The Rams (13-8) clinched the 4A SPSL eighth seed in the upcoming 4A West Central District tournament with its win over the Chargers (12-13), behind a big day from Kolby Force.

Force had a hot bat, going 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run. Bailey Smith chipped in with a triple of his own, and a run scored.

Rogers jumped to an early 2-0 lead over Kentridge. A couple more insurance runs in the sixth allowed them to stave off a late Chargers rally in the seventh.

The two teams will play each other again on Tuesday in a loser-out game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Heidelberg Recreation Center in Tacoma.

Tahoma 7, Jefferson 3: The Bears’ (16-5) early offense proved to be too much for the Raiders (9-10) to overcome as Tahoma clinched the fifth seed in the SPSL.

Brandon Lewis was dominant on the mound. Lewis pitched seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out 10. Asher Walker had a great day at the plate for the Bears, going 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Walker also scored two runs and drew a walk.

With this win, Tahoma picks up the fifth seed in the SPSL. The bears face Gig Harbor on Tuesday. The winner-to-state game begins at 7 p.m. at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma. Jefferson falls to the sixth seed in the SPSL to take on Puyallup in a winner-to-state game Tuesday. That game starts at 7 p.m. at Kent Memorial Park.

Graham-Kapowsin 9, Curtis 8: With their season on the line, the Vikings (11-11, 5-7 4A SPSL South) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was not enough as the Eagles (10-12, 6-6 4A SPSL South) picked up the No. 11 seed in the 4A SPSL.

The offense was abundant for both teams in the loser-out game. Graham-Kapowsin got the extra run they needed in the top of the seventh inning. Nathan Anderson doubled in a run to expand the Eagles lead to four. Anderson’s insurance run would be crucial as he went to the mound in the bottom of the seventh. George Thompson hit a bases loaded double to bring the Vikings within one. Anderson bounced back to strike out the final batter of the game.

Cole Chambers lead the Eagles offensively as he went 3 for 5, knocking in two RBIs while scoring a run.

The Eagles have earned a game against Olympia on Tuesday. The loser-out game starts at 4 p.m. at Heritage Recreation Center in Puyallup.

Vashon 10, Olympia 3: A huge sixth inning was the difference in the Pirates’ (14-4) win over the Bears (13-5).

Vashon entered the seventh inning behind 3-1, but jumped ahead with seven runs in the sixth inning. They tacked on a couple insurance runs in the final frame.

Levi Myer, Logan Hawkins and Chester Pruett all hit home runs.

Federal Way 6, Kentwood 4: The Eagles (17-3) pitching held the Conquerors (19-3, 11-1) to just four hits as Federal Way became the No. 2 seed in the SPSL.

Kyle Williams, Dawson Bakker and Ben Koler held the Conquerors offense in check. Williams pitched five innings, allowing just three hits while striking out two. Bakker pitched one inning, giving up a hit, and striking out one. Koler came on to close out the game, striking out one in the final inning.

Bakker was also instrumental in the Eagles offense. He went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Mark Wright also drove in a pair of runs.

The Eagles square off against Emerald Ridge in a winner-to-state game on Wednesday 7 p.m. at Heritage Recreation Center in Puyallup. Kentwood is now the number three seed in the SPSL and will face Timberline on Wednesday 4 p.m. at Foss.

SOFTBALL

Top Performer: Meg Sullivan, Bellarmine Prep, junior

2-for-4, 3 R, 4 RBI — in 16-4 win over Stadium

Shelton 9, Olympia 6: A late surge pushed the Highclimbers (15-2) past the Bears (3-14) in a non-league game.

The Highclimbers scored six runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 1-run deficit. Natalie Albaugh got it done in the circle as well as in the batter's box for her team. Albaugh picking up the win, hit a towering home run and stole a base. Shelton’s Lindsey Corey was scorching as she went 4 for 4, driving in and scoring two runs.

Shelton will compete in the 3A Narrows League tournament as a number 2 seed. Olympia moves on to 4A Narrows League tournament.

Bellarmine Prep 16, Stadium 4 (5 innings): Meg Sullivan hit a home run and drove in four runs as the Lions pushed their lead to nine runs in the top of the third inning to cruise past the Tigers in the mercy-rule victory.

Erica Grenlund earned the win from the circle and was 3-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBIs for Bellarmine (5-6, 8-9 4A Narrows).

Izzy Chapman was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Stadium (4-13; 0-10 4A Narrows).

W.F. West 7, Tumwater 6: A late rally from the Thunderbirds (9-5, 4-3 2A Evergreen) wasn’t enough to unravel the Bearcats’ (17-0, 7-0) lead in this game.

W.F. West led 7-3 in the seventh inning when Tumwater scored three runs to bring the deficit to just one. However, the surge ended there and the Bearcats escaped with the victory.

Tessa Wollan provided the pop for W.F. West, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jocelyn Glasgo had 13 strikeouts for Tumwater in the loss.

Tacoma Baptist 12, Rainier 6: The Crusaders (9-8, 8-7 2B Pacific) doubled up the Mountaineers (4-15, 4-11) behind a big effort from Alissa Peterson.

Peterson cracked a home run and drove in three runs on a 3 for 5 day. Teammate Jen Brooks also pitched in with two triples and a double.
