Capital girls claim title in last Narrows League meet

Capital High won its first league track title since 2002 in what will likely be the last Narrows League meet ever.

The Cougars won the Class 3A girls meet Thursday and Saturday at Highclimber Stadium, outscoring second-place Central Kitsap, 164.5 to 136.5.

Capital had no firsts on the meet’s second day, but unexpected strength in the shot put and 3,200 meters helped the Cougars outdistance the field.

With the demise of the Narrows League, Saturday marked the last Narrows meet. Bellarmine won the girls 4A with 168.5 points to Gig Harbor’s 167.

On the boys side, Tacoma-area schools dominated. Gig Harbor built a huge edge on second-place Bellarmine, 202.5 to 119.5, in the 4A meet. Lincoln, with 190 points, outdistanced second-place Central Kitsap by 74 points.

Addie Peters placed second in the shot put for Capital with a heave of 32-11, and the Cougars got important points in fourth and fifth from sophomore Janessa Durant (30-3) and junior Elise Braseth (29-8 ½). Durant’s effort was a PR (personal record) by more than two feet, and Braseth surpassed her previous best by a foot and a half.

“That was huge for us,” Capital coach Kevin Wright said of his shot put trio.

Junior Bella Torres (12:01.96) and sophomore Naomi Reyes (12:09.94) finish second and third in the 3,200 to earn critical points for the Cougars.

Wright praised sophomore Regie Grady, who Wright said was physically not 100 percent but gutted out a second place in the 200 meters in 26.41 behind Wilson’s Morgan Greene (26.21). Grady and Greene reversed positions in the 100 on Thursday.

Host Shelton’s fourth-place finish in the 3A boys meet (101.5 points) was led by a 1-2 punch in the pole vault. Junior Cody Simon vaulted 12-6 to nose out teammate James Gardner’s 12-0.

Colton Paller won the discus for the Highclimbers with a toss of 148-2.

Joseph Donan scored first-place points for Yelm with a 13-foot pole vault, edging Alex Brown of Olympia, who cleared the same height.

Timberline had two sophomore champions Saturday. Rachel Izuagbe leaped 16-1 to win the girls 4A long jump. Makenna Hansen won the 200 meters in 26.52.

Olympia had a winner in versatile senior Maia Halvorson. Halvorson, who placed third in the 800 meters, won the javelin with a toss of 117-2.
