Undefeated Angela Schuster of Timberline wins first 4A district singles title
The streak continues for Timberline’s Angela Schuster.
The sophomore hasn’t lost a tennis match this season, and Saturday at the Boeing Tennis Center in Kent, she won her first Class 4A West Central District tournament singles title, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, over Gig Harbor’s Joyce Park.
“That last match — it was hard, but it felt really good after I won,” said Schuster.
Down 3-0 in the final set, Schuster had to rally to defeat Park, who was the defending district champion. Schuster has topped Park in all three of their meetings this season.
“A lot of people were cheering for me, and I was trying to stay calm,” Schuster said.
Composure was important. Schuster lost the first set, 6-2. It was the first time she trailed in a match this season.
“She hit so many winners,” Schuster said. “I got pretty crushed in the first set. Second set, I was able to battle back and get in it. Third set … I still felt pretty calm and I was able to manage and take it.”
Schuster took fifth at the 4A state tournament last year as a freshman. Her only loss was in the first round to Skyview’s Sammi Hampton, the eventual state champion. Schuster won three consecutive consolation matches to place.
“I definitely think I’ve improved a lot (this year), and I’m going to hopefully go for a lot higher than fifth,” she said.
Olympia junior Ali Topp also qualified for the state tournament in singles, defeating Todd Beamer’s Avery Liening, 6-2, 6-3, to finish third. Audrey Berghoff and Cydne Wooten took third place in doubles for the Bears by defeating Kentwood’s team, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
