Twenty local golfers advance
Twenty golfers from South Sound high schools — 13 boys and seven girls — advanced to the second day of the WIAA state tournaments.
4A BOYS
At Meadow Springs Country Club, Richland
Leader: Tommy McCoy, Eastlake High School (first-round 70).
Locals: Olympia’s Connor McCauley (tied for 17th) shot a 76, and Riley Killip (T-21), the 4A Narrows League champion, shot a 77. Teammate Cameron McCauley (T-38) also made the cut with an 81.
4A GIRLS
At Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco
Leader: Jalayne Martinez, Pasco (69).
Locals: Olympia’s Claire Moon (T-33) was the only local to qualify for the second day. She shot an 82.
3A BOYS
At Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, Spokane
Leader: Sam Warkentin, Bainbridge (69).
Locals: Three of Capital’s four golfers qualified for the second day. Eric Hagen, a transfer from Aberdeen, and Gabe Barnes each shot 73 and are tied for eighth. Capital’s Travis Bossio and Shelton’s Tim Nail (T-35) each shot 80 to make the cut.
3A GIRLS
At Indian Canyon Golf Course, Spokane
Co-leaders: Abby Euyang, Lakeside of Seattle; Therese Warner, Southridge (76).
Locals: Capital’s Mica Livingston (T-16) shot an 86, and Shelton’s Jaymie Pentony (T-18) shot an 87 to qualify for the second day.
2A BOYS
At Horn Rapids Golf Course, Richland
Leader: Luke Hall, Liberty of Issaquah (73).
Locals: Three 2A EvCo schools — Centralia, Tumwater and W.F. West — had golfers qualify for the second day. Centralia’s Deter Voetberg (T-6) was in the best position after shooting a 76. Tumwater’s Dylan Christoffer (T-19) shot an 80, and Jordan Baird (T-34) recorded an 83. W.F. West’s Will Alexander (T-23) shot an 81, and Hayden Dobyns (T-37) made the cut with an 84. Rochester’s Brock Hawes (T-37) also made the cut at 84.
2A GIRLS
At Columbia Point Golf Course, Richland
Leader: Kenedee Peters, Ephrata (77).
Locals: Two Black Hills golfers are nearly neck-and-neck after the first day. Elle Hirotaka (23rd) shot a 93, and teammate Emma Darling (T-24) had a 94. Centralia’s Julie Mettler (T-29) also qualified with a 96, and W.F. West’s Kate Balmelli (T-34) shot a 97.
