Round 1, No. 22 overall

Fans cheered at Lumen Field in Seattle as the hometown club’s first pick was announced Sunday evening. For the third consecutive season, the Mariners selected a high school position player with their first-round pick, this time adding Emerson, a 17-year-old left-handed-hitting shortstop, to their system. “He is a pure hitter who already possesses an advanced knowledge of the strike zone,” Mariners director of amateur scouting Scott Hunter said in a release. “As a member of Team USA last summer, he was an important part of the lineup that won the Gold Medal. We see Colt as an advanced hitter who will not only hit for average but power in the future. Colt’s leadership and polished approach to the game makes us extremely excited to add him to our organization.” Emerson hit .446 with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 25 RBI his senior season on the way to both Ohio’s Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year honors this spring.
