It’s a ...! Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald’s, wife’s lives to get doubly better

Mike Macdonald’s life just got doubly better. And doubly busier.

The Super Bowl-champion Seahawks coach and his wife Stephanie are expecting the birth of their second child. The baby is due near the end of the 39-year-old coach’s third, upcoming season leading Seattle’s NFL team.

Macdonald announced the news Thursday, unprompted, at the end of his appearance on The Dan Patrick Show at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada.

Macdonald is golfing in the tournament this week, in another measure of his newfound celebrity status. He was describing how fast the year and half has gone by since the birth of Stephanie’s and his first child, their son Jack.

“We’re got another on the way, so it’s going to be fun,” Macdonald told Patrick on the air.

The host asked the coach if he and his wife know what they are having.

“A baby girl,” Macdonald said. “In December.”

Patrick joked they should name the baby “Samantha. After Sam Darnold.”

Macdonald laughed at that.

“We do have a name,” the coach said. “But we’ll tell everybody that later.”

Macdonald’s comments came at the end of a wide-ranging discussion with Patrick. It included football, the coach’s belief that analytics are a tool to help guide his decisions in games but that he still relies on what his eyes and instincts tell him — and how adept Macdonald has gotten changing son Jack’s diaper.

He joked to Patrick he can usually change a diaper in under the time of an NFL play clock: 40 seconds.

The discussion with Patrick finished with the Seahawks coach talking about the importance of maintaining a work-life balance.

Macdonald has made it norm in his first two seasons after arriving as the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator to lead Seattle for he and his assistant coaches to be out of the office at Seahawks headquarters and home by early evenings. Even during game weeks during the season and playoffs.

He told Patrick he tells his players and assistants: “If I’m making decisions after 9 p.m., we’re in trouble.”

Macdonald and the Seahawks begin training camp this month. Rookies are due to report to the team’s Virginia Mason Athletic Center for camp July 17. Veterans are due to report July 24.

The first practice of training camp for the defending Super Bowl champions is July 25. It is open to the public, by registering on the team’s website.
