Dave Canales is Seahawks’ new wide receivers coach, replacing retired Kippy Brown
The Seahawks made an announcement today. It isn’t what you and the football world has been waiting for.
No, Russell Wilson still hasn’t agreed to a contract extension beyond his rookie deal that ends after this season. A wholly artificial “deadline” that “sources” have floated in national stories as being tomorrow morning when the quarterback takes the field at team headquarters in Renton for the first practice of training camp may have been meant to spur an agreement.
But when I asked coach Pete Carroll last month if the team would stop negotiating with Wilson and focus on the upcoming season, Carroll said: “No, I don't care how long we keep working. Whatever it takes to do the right thing.”
So tomorrow may or may not be the end of talks with Wilson’s agent for 2015. Or the end of speculation about the would-be deal.
Instead, the Seahawks announced today through a profile on their team website that Dave Canales is their new wide receivers coach. He is replacing the retired Kippy Brown.
Canales joined the Seahawks as an entry-level quality-control coach in 2010. He moved that year with coach Pete Carroll from USC to Seattle. Since then Canales has helped work with the Seahawks’ quarterbacks and assisted Brown with the receivers.
“We’re very excited about Dave rising up as the new wide receivers coach,” Carroll told Seahawks.com. “He’s got great enthusiasm, he’s a very strong communicator, and he’s very innovative.
“Kippy was a tremendous part of our staff and played a big-time role in helping our young players and young coaches develop. He’s a lifelong friend and we’ll always be so grateful for his contributions.”
Canales played quarterback for Carson High School just south of Los Angeles then was a substitute teacher. His first coaching job with Carson’s High’s junior varsity team in 2004. He was a volunteer assistant at El Camino junior college from 2006-08.
Carroll hired him in 2009 to be USC’s weight-room coach and an offensive assistant.
ALSO TODAY... all players are due at team headquarters to report for camp and take physicals. The first practice is scheduled to begin Friday at 10:25 a.m.
