GM John Schneider: Seahawks will put Marshawn Lynch on reserve/retired list by June 1, take entire cap charge this year

Seahawks running back still hasn’t officially submitted his retirement paperwork, but GM John Schneider says the team won’t wait for that to make a retirement roster move before June 1 for salary-cap purposes.

The Seahawks’ apparently aren’t going to wait around for Marshawn Lynch to be officially officially retired.

General manager was on Seattle’s KJR-AM radio Tuesday and said the team intends to place the star running back on the reserve/retired list prior to June 1. That will mean his $5 million charge against the Seahawks’ salary cap will all count in 2016. If Seattle put him on the list after June 1 it could have divided the cap charge equally between this year and next.

Schneider told KJR morning host Mitch Levy the team can place Lynch on the reserve/retired list whether or not he submits his retirement papers by June 1. Schneider said Saturday after the draft ended Lynch had still yet to do that, though coach Pete Carroll emphasized Lynch was “committed to being retired.”

Schneider likened the decision on accounting for the final two years on Lynch’s contract and its signing bonus through his retirement to paying off a credit card balance as soon as possible.

“You want to pay off your credit card as you go,” the GM told KJR. “So like with us, if we place him on reserve/retired then we accept that cap hit this year. And we would rather do that than do it after June 1.”

He then clarified the team didn’t want to be charged $2.5 million for Lynch against 2017’s cap.

“Exactly,” he said.
