Sounders can’t wait for August
Here’s some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say today as the Sounders went through a light day of regeneration work in beginning preparations for their Saturday visit from the Vancouver Whitecaps:
On if the club takes consolation from return of Brad Evans: Today was just a day of let’s get a good jog and just do a little activity – juggling as some of them were doing – and just leave it at that. It was a long flight yesterday.
On timeline for return of All-Stars Clint Dempsey and Chad Marshall: They should be back on Thursday, but they’ll probably miss Thursday’s training with the All-Star Game being on Wednesday night. They’ll miss Thursday and then they’ll be in training on Friday and then we’ll see.
On if they’re expected for Saturday game: We’ll see.
On progress of Stefan Frei and Obafemi Martins: Stefan did more training today, got through training. Went with us on the weekend to Montreal so we could keep him in training. Oba feels a lot better. He was able to do lot more with his right foot, so we ‘ll see how he progresses into tomorrow.
On frustrating from late losses: It’s frustrating because when you add up three games together we’re probably 12 minutes away from having three ties. And although three ties are not brilliant, three ties are a lot better than three losses. It’s just managing the game through to the end. But it’s also a lot of pressure on the defense when we don’t score on the other end of the field. We’ve had two offensive games that were better, in the two home games if you include D.C. – D.C. and Colorado were better games in terms of getting forward and doing some stuff. But the two road games – Chicago and Montreal – for sure getting a tie would have been a little bit fortunate based on the amount of possession and the amount of pressure we put on the opponent.
On if August and returning players offer clean break: We can’t wait for the calendar to turn to August. July was not a good month for us, and we’ve got to move on to August.
