Health updates: Leo, Oba, Frei, Friberg and All-Stars
Here are the Tuesday health reports from Sounders coach Sigi Schmid:
On Leo Gonzalez injury at Montreal: He had an MRI yesterday. There’s a little bit of a strain in his hamstring. He’s getting something else done either today or tomorrow, but he’s out for this weekend and then we’ll see how the next procedure goes.
On health of Stefan Frei: Good. We had him in the whole practice today. We wanted to see him in on things live. We’ll see how he feels after having gone through that.
On health of Obafemi Martins: Getting better. He’s feeling more comfortable. He was hitting some balls with his right foot and things like that, so we’ll continue to progress him.
If any league updates on Marco Pappa: No. He’s going through what he’s going through right now, and we’ll hear the details later.
Indication of All-Star minutes for Dempsey and Marshall: My understanding is they’ve got 22 players, so hopefully everybody plays 45 minutes. I think for All-Star games like this the league should actually allow 24 players, so that way you have a sub in case somebody does get injured, which you unfortunately hope never happens. But I don’t think anybody in an All-Star game like this should play more than 45 minutes.
On Erik Friberg’s first two appearances: You can’t evaluate Erik at this stage. He came in and we kind of threw him into the fire a little bit when fitness-wise we knew it was limited. The game in Montreal, I don’t think his first half was of a standard that he would want it to be, and that was because he’s at a stage where he’s a little more heavy-legged, so we have to take that into account. But he’s getting over his heavy-leggedness a little bit right now, his fitness will come along: There’s a big drop off in his running from first half to second half.
The Sounders will be off on Wednesday, so our next updates will likely follow training Thursday. That will be a travel day for Dempsey and Marshall, so we likely won’t hear from them until Friday, the eve of the Sounders’ next match: 7 p.m. Saturday, Vancouver Whitecaps, CenturyLink Field.
