This just in from the PDL:
The PDL announced the finalists for the 2015 PDL Awards on Wednesday, with the league’s Most Valuable Player, Young Player of the Year, Defender of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and Coach of the Year set to be unveiled at Thursday’s Championship Dinner, part of the 2015 PDL Championship presented by Nike in Seattle, Wash. The 2015 PDL Awards were selected through a vote of team management.
A trio of standout performers are nominated for the PDL’s Most Valuable Player award. The Seacoast United Phantoms’ Anthony Grant is nominated for a second consecutive season after earning the league’s Golden Boot and Scoring title, while Jersey Express midfielder Carlos Vitor Alvarenga Silva earned nomination after leading the Express to the PDL Playoffs with six goals and 10 assists.
Kitsap Pumas goalkeeper Matt Grosey is the third MVP finalist, after recording a league-best 0.333 goals-against average, and is also one of the finalists for the Goalkeeper of the Year award alongside GPS Portland Phoenix’s Matt Williams and SW Florida Adrenaline’s Michael Yantz.
The Young Player of the Year features three standout U-21 players, including the Portland Timbers U-23s Todd Wharton. The University of Virginia midfielder excelled throughout the summer, as did fellow Northwest Division standout Timothy Mueller, who had nine goals in nine appearances for Lane United. The Charlotte Eagles’ Lalas Abubakar also shone this season as he helped lead the Eagles to an undefeated regular season.
Charlotte’s David Dixon and Kitsap’s Cameron MacDonald are among the four nominees for Coach of the Year after both led their squads to undefeated regular seasons. They are joined by the Sounders FC U23’s Darren Sawatzky, who helped guide the side to its second national semifinal appearance in the PDL Playoffs, and the Michigan Bucks’ Demir Muftari, who helped the defending champions reach another conference title game.
The Sounders FC U23’s Jonathan Campbell, one of the keys to his side’s berth at the PDL Championship, is one of the nominees for Defender of the Year, where he is joined by the Portland Timbers U-23s Dennis Castillo. Hugo Leroux of the expansion FC Miami City Champions also earned nomination after an excellent season that saw him help the side reach the Southern Conference Championship.
Both semifinals and the championship game at the 2015 PDL Championship presented by Nike will be streamed live on the PDL’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/USLPDL), with live updates also available through the league’s official Twitter account (@USLPDL).
