Martins, Valdez rejuvinate Sounders in 4-0 win
Obafemi Martins returned with a bang, and Nelson Valdez introduced himself with a flourish this afternoon, and the rejuvenated Seattle Sounders routed expansion Orlando City SC, 3-0, before a crowd of 40,453 at CenturyLink Field.
Martins scored the first and third goals after electric runs through the goal box, while Valdez scored on a header in his MLS debut. Thomas set the final score in stoppage time -- his first goal as a Sounder.
It was the first multi-goal game for the Sounders since June 13 at Dallas – which also happened to be Martins’ last MLS appearance before going out with a leg injury.
Helping preserve the shutout with central defender Roman Torres, also in his MLS debut.
Orlando City played the final 50 minutes a man down after defender Tyler Turner picked up his second yellow card.
Seattle (11-12-2) ended a five-game losing streak.
Next, the Sounders’ turn their attention to CONCACAF Champions League and a Wednesday visit from Olimpia of Honduras. Seattle returns to MLS play Saturday at Real Salt Lake.
