Season-ending knee injury for Sounders’ Roman Torres

The Seattle Sounders newly acquired central defender Roman Torres suffered a season-ending knee injury Saturday in San Jose, the club confirmed this afternoon.

Torres limped off the Avaya Stadium pitch with an apparent knee injury. Afterward he left the locker room with crutches.

This morning, coach Sigi Schmid said Torres was undergoing an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test.

In the early afternoon, teammate Tyrone Mears sent an Instragram message of support and condolence for his teammate.

Really sorry to hear the extent of my teams mates injury, such a good player and nice guy. We will support u all the way in your road to recovery. I've experienced long term injuries and know how hard it can be, stay strong amigo. Torres

And soon thereafter, a club representative confirmed the season-ending knee injury, with additional information expected from Schmid tomorrow.

Torres, 29, signed with the Sounders this summer after a standout performance with the Panama national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He is expected to be replaced at central defense by Brad Evans and/or Zach Scott. Evans also suffered an apparent head injury in the San Jose game and is undergoing the MLS concussion protocol.
