Herculez Gomez trains with Sounders

Former U.S. international forward Herculez Gomez was at Sounders training today.

The club would not discuss his presence, sticking to policy of not talking about players who aren’t under contract.

Gomez isn’t under contract to anyone -- apparently Sounders included -- and therefore is available to anyone -- Sounders included. He is 33 years old, at last belonged to Toronto FC. He played in Mexico for the five seasons before that, and was in MLS in the latter years of the previous decade. In 2003 he made 17 appearances on loan to the USL Sounders.

Seattle, of course, is short on experiencced productive forwards since the transfer of Obafemi Martins. In their two MLS games this season, the team has scored one goal -- none coming from forwards Clint Dempsey, Nelson Valdez and rookie Jordan Morris. And Valdez’s immediate status is uncertain after leaving late in the 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake with a thigh injury. Morris also left that game early.

“Morris is fine,” coach Sigi Schmid said today. “Valdez is not as bad: We’ll see in the next few days. (Midfielder Erik) Friberg has an MCL strain, but we don’t really know how sever or hold long that might take.”
