Mason County Sheriff’s Office says it has made an arrest in a bizarre case that involved a dead raccoon, a hit and run and a shooting suspect on the loose.

It all started June 25 with a man walking along Route 3 near Allyn dragging a dead raccoon on a 15-foot rope. He later told investigators he planned to use it as bait in a crab pot.

Passing motorists got upset, thinking the animal was a dog. An argument ensued between the man and someone in a black pickup. The walking man was shot twice and then run over by the pickup.

The man was taken to the hospital and is recovering. His name and age were not released.

Investigators reviewed videos from the scene and interviewed occupants from another vehicle that had contact with the man.

KOMO reports the suspect was arrested Tuesday without incident at a home in Pierce County. Deputies also found the pickup and weapon they believe were involved in the incident.

Video posted on Q13 News shows the man before the shooting.
