2 dogs, 2 tortoises and other small animals safe after overnight fire in Olympia

A bevy of small animals were rescued from a house fire early Sunday morning, according to the Olympia Fire Department.

The eight people occupying the residence also were not injured.

About 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Olympia fire was dispatched to the 1500 block of Fir Street Northeast where they discovered the following: heavy smoke and fire inside and outside a garage. The fire also was burning in the first and second floors of the residence, as well as an RV and another vehicle in the driveway.

The eight residents exited the residence with one dog. Firefighters found a second dog, two tortoises and other small animals, which they brought to the family.

The vehicle and tent trailer were destroyed by the fire. Total damages are estimated at between $150,000 and $200,000.

The fire was extinguished at 1:30 a.m.

Olympia fire responded with four engines, two medic units, one ladder truck and a command unit.
