Olympia School Board District 5 incumbent Mark Campeau will advance to November’s general election, but it appears he has a fight on his hands after challenger Scott Clifthorne, who also advances, topped him with 44 percent of the votes, according to early returns Tuesday.

Campeau followed him with more than 40 percent of the vote. Rebecca Cornelius was a distant third with 14.6 percent of the vote.

Clifthorne, president of the Lincoln Elementary parent teacher organization, wants to improve community engagement on school district issues, according to The Olympian voters guide. Campeau wants to address the “opportunity gap” for low-income and special needs kids.
