Interstate 5 in Tumwater was closed in both directions for about 30 minutes Sunday morning after a man threatened to jump from the Custer Way overpass, according to Tumwater police.

The man was later taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital, Sgt. Jen Kolb said Sunday.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Tumwater police responded to the scene where they found a man in crisis, threatening to jump off the overpass. After a conversation with police, the man eventually stepped back from the railing and was taken to the hospital.

Kolb said Tumwater police received assistance from the Washington State Patrol and a Lacey police officer who had previously developed a rapport with the man.

I-5 reopened about 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Trooper Brooke Bova said.
