Matthew McConaughey was spotted filming in Roy on Thursday.

Roy Police Chief Darwin Armitage said filming for a Lincoln car commercial got started early Thursday morning on 288th Street South and was scheduled to last into the night.

“Yes, I saw him with my own eyes,” Roy resident Katy Burkett said of McConaughey. Burkett, who owns property nearby, said she took the day off of work to watch the filming.

Nicole Kelly said she watched Lincoln SUVs driving back and forth over railroad tracks from her yard on 288th Street South. She had heard rumors about a film crew in town earlier this week.

“We’ve been out all morning in the rain, me and my mom and neighbors,” she said. “There just were a lot of people and crew members.”

Burkett said someone came to see her last week about using her property. She was told it would be for a Lincoln commercial, and she thought McConaughey might be involved.

“They told us it was Lincoln and then they said they needed somewhere to park the makeup truck. I said ‘Why would they need a makeup truck if it wasn’t Matthew McConaughey?’” she said.

Armitage said Roy police were assisting because some of the crew’s equipment was parked on city land. Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies were at the filming because that was on county land.

Armitage said he had seen McConaughey but hadn’t talked to him.

“This guy’s got a job to do, and I’ve got mine,” he said.
