Olympia man dies after vehicle rolls over on JBLM property; driver arrested
Shawn M. Herndon, a 22-year-old Olympia man, died Saturday night after the Jeep he was riding in rolled over on Joint Base Lewis-McChord property near Rainier Road and Spurgeon Creek Road, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
Another passenger, a Lacey woman thought to be about 30, was trapped and injured after the vehicle flipped. A third passenger jumped out of the vehicle, Sgt. Kevin Slease said Sunday.
The 24-year old Lacey man driving the Jeep was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges. He also was thought to be driving under the influence, Slease said. He was booked into the Thurston County Jail late Saturday.
About 7 p.m. Saturday, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of Rainier Road and Spurgeon Creek Road. The four people in the Jeep apparently had decided to do some off-road driving on JBLM property, Slease said.
