A man and a woman, both thought to be in their 60s, were injured Tuesday afternoon after their tandem bicycle was struck by a small SUV at Lacey Boulevard Southeast and Spurline Road, according to Lacey fire and police officials.

The couple was southbound across Lacey Boulevard during the lunch hour Tuesday when an eastbound vehicle apparently crashed into them. Both bicyclists were wearing helmets, but still suffered serious — but not life-threatening — injuries, Battalion Chief Tim Hulse said.

The woman may have suffered a hip injury, while the man had cuts and bruises, he said.

Wearing helmets “benefited them greatly,” Hulse said. The pair were taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
