1 dead after I-5 collision. More wrecks snarl traffic around South Sound
An 80-year-old Oregon man was killed when a semi-truck hit his car on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 86 late Sunday, according to Washington State Patrol.
The crash occurred just before 12 a.m. The semi-truck driver, a 36-year-old Yelm man, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Investigators believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to Trooper Brooke Bova.
State patrol identified the deceased as Edward Chambers of Beaverton, Oregon.
A 19-year-old man from Hillsboro who was a passenger in the car was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been released. According to the passenger, the car was overheating and the driver was trying to get to the shoulder from the right late when the car was hit by the semi.
Bova said as workers were clearing the scene Monday morning, an inattentive driver struck a DOT truck. No injuries were reported in that crash.
Another collision took place in the backup during the investigation, Bova tweeted.

It was one of several accidents that snarled traffic across the region on Monday morning.
Early Monday morning state trooper Rick Johnson tweeted that an accident on northbound Interstate 5 near 375th Street in Federal Way closed two lanes and was being investigated as a vehicular assault. Two people were injured and one had serious injuries. The investigation was completed and the road was open by 3:40 a.m.
In Auburn, a rollover accident blocked the inside lanes in both directions of state Route 18 near Route 167. There were no injuries, Johnson tweeted.
Another non-injury rollover accident took place Monday morning on state Route 169 near Renton, Johnson tweeted.
A collision on eastbound state Route 104 near Kingston blocked all lanes on Monday morning, according to a WSDOT tweet. Traffic was using the shoulder to pass the accident but WSDOT tweeted “Please use lots of caution and expect delays. Consider delaying your trip if possible.”
Shortly before 9 a.m. a collision on westbound state Route 16 near Wollochet Drive blocked the right lane.
