Hunt agrees to fine in campaign finance disclosure case

State Sen. Sam Hunt of Olympia has agreed to pay a $1,367 fine to resolve a campaign finance disclosure case dating back to last November’s election.

In February, the state Attorney General’s office alleged that Hunt, a Democrat representing the 22nd Legislative District, didn’t report in-kind contributions, expenditures and incurred debts quickly enough. Hunt told The Olympian in March that none of the violations was “willful.”

The fine for such violations in Washington state is $2,735, according to Thurston County Superior Court documents. But half of the fine was suspended for four years — meaning Hunt won’t pay the remaining amount as long as he doesn’t violate disclosure laws during that time period.

Court records show that Hunt already has paid the $1,367 sum. He also agreed to pay $3,740 to cover attorney fees, the cost of the investigation, and the cost of court proceedings.
