High school football roundup: Pineda’s burst lifts Centralia over Rochester in final seconds

Jose Pineda’s 4-yard touchdown burst up the middle broke a tie with 8.5 seconds to play, lifting Centralia to its first Class 2A Evergreen Conference win of the season, 42-35, over Rochester on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Pineda’s acrobatic 22-yard reception from Kolby Baird kept the Tigers’ nine-play, 59-yard scoring drive alive moments earlier on third-and-9.

Pineda finished the game with 196 yards of total offense, carrying the ball 16 times for 108 yards and catching three passes for 88 yards.

Centralia’s Dylan Purkey carried 20 times for 116 yards, while Baird passed for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Rochester pounced on pair of Centralia fumbles to take a 14-0 lead before the game was 30 seconds old.

A fumble on the opening kickoff gave the Warriors the ball inside Centralia territory. On the first play from scrimmage, trick play resulted in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Daniel May to Patrick Riley.

On the next play from scrimmage, the Tigers fumbled again and Rochester quarterback Bryce Lollar ran the recovery for a 32-yard touchdown.

Centralia tied it on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Purkey and Pineda before Rochester regained the lead on a 3-yard scamper by workhorse running back Enrique Sanchez.

Sanchez led the Warriors with 127 yards on 24 carries.

The Tigers (2-5, 1-2 2A EvCo) scored three more first-half touchdowns, the last on an incredible leaping catch by Pineda to enter intermission up 35-21.

Twice in the third quarter, Rochester (2-5, 0-2) forced Centralia to turn the ball over on downs. The Warriors tied the game again — on a 6-yard Gerardo Carpio run and an 11-yard pass from Lollar to May — before Pineda’s heroics.

No. 4 Tumwater 60, at Aberdeen 0: Three T-Birds found the end zone twice, as Tumwater shut out the Bobcats at Stewart Field.

Zane Murphy gave Tumwater a lead it never lost on a 16-yard jaunt in the first quarter, and later added a 60-yard kickoff return, capping a 29-point second quarter that gave the T-Birds a 46-0 advantage at the break.

Connor Clark added touchdown runs of 43 and 35 yards, while Dylan Paine found the end zone from 19 and 9 yards out.

In its first two league games against Centralia and Aberdeen, Tumwater (5-2, 2-0) has allowed just seven points.

At No. 7 Graham-Kapowsin 31, Olympia 7: University of Washington commit Dylan Morris completed 16 of 23 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles built a 28-7 halftime lead in their bounce-back win at Art Crate Stadium in Spanaway.

Morris threw touchdown passes to Michael Kelly and Tre Mason III in the first quarter for a 14-0 G-K lead. Mason caught three passes for 62 yards and Eython Daugherty had seven catches for 68 yards.

Running back Micah Smith made it 21-0 on his touchdown run, finishing with 79 yards on 11 carries. Graham-Kapowsin (6-1, 5-1 4A SPSL) lost its first game of the season against Puyallup last week.

Ketner Young’s 1-yard plunge in the second quarter was the only time Olympia found the end zone. The Bears (4-3, 4-3) are on a two-game skid after losses to Sumner and G-K.

At North Thurston 20, Shelton 7: The Rams picked up their first win of the season at South Sound Stadium, aided by two touchdown passes from quarterback Dylan Harn.

“The biggest thing for us is that the kids executed in the passing game a little better than before,” North Thurston coach William Garrow said. “We only gave up one big play and they did a great job.

“Dylan did a nice job for us today. He found the right receiver and he didn’t let shortcomings get to him.”

Tied at 7-7 entering the second quarter, Harn found Garrett Wallace for 6 yards to give the Rams a lead. He added another 14-yard touchdown pass to Austin Bates in the third quarter.

“Zion Kirk ran the ball a ton for tough yards and set play action,” Garrow said. “They deserve the win.”

Shelton didn’t score in the final three frames.
